The Board Bulletin December 2015

A Letter from USBA's President,
Kristi Swett

Happy Holidays!

November sped by so quickly, it was a busy month. There were some highlights, teaching a Weblo group all about school boards, spending the day with the Garfield board, meeting with the Governor and Tami Pyfer and wrapping up the month with family around our Thanksgiving table!

Now that we are on the countdown to Christmas, the month will, once again, speed by. Our state January conference will be here before we know it, so I wanted to give you a preview of what is coming in January on the 7th, 8th, and 9th.

Our speaker Thursday night to kick off the conference will be Nicole Picas Pace, Olympic medal winner.

What Will I Find at the Annual Conference for Me?

I look forward to seeing each of you at the Annual USBA Conference January 7, 8 & 9th, 2016. What will I find for me? You will find a wealth of knowledge with General Session speakers, additional breakout sessions, and team building with your own Board, Superintendent, and Business Administrator and with other conference attendees. To our veteran board members you will find a lineup of high powered speakers and breakout sessions on current issues and timely topics. This year we hope that you will consider dividing and conquering the breakout sessions by having at least one person from your district attend each session and then sharing the information learned. You won’t want to miss the entertainment on Friday night after a long day, it will be an evening of fun and just what we need to end a perfect day.

I hope you will also plan to attend the other 2016 professional development opportunities: February 19th Day on the Hill, April 9-11th NSBA Annual Conference, March & April USBA Spring Regional Meetings, May/June/July great months to work on the Master Board Award (MBA), August 13th USBA pre-delegate Assembly, August 14th USBA Delegate Assembly, September/October/November USBA Regional Meetings. For more dates and information please visit our website at and of course you can call on me at anytime 801.566.1207.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

I hope this finds all of you content and happy after a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful for all of you and the amazing things you are doing in behalf of the children of Utah. I am very humbled to be numbered among you.
In November NSBA held our Board of Directors meeting at our offices in Alexandria, Virginia. All of our committees were able to further the good work of NSBA and we also had several presentations from staff. The theme of the meetings capitalized on the importance of student achievement and local governance.

Safety Spotlight - Winter Driving Tips

During winter months, driving often becomes hazardous, dangerous and very stressful. In order to better cope with winter driving conditions, it might be helpful to remember the acronym “S.P.A.C.E.”!

Speed- This is the #1 cause of winter driving accidents. Slow down and arrive safely.

Patience- Being in a hurry can cause carelessness.

Awareness- Be aware of those around you.

Concentration- Focus on the task of driving. Forget about radios, make up, cell phones, etc…

Exit- Drive in such a way that you have an escape route, if you need one.
