The Board Bulletin March 2016

A Letter from USBA's New President,
Nancy Kennedy

Happy March! The days are getting longer and I saw a newborn calf snuggled into the hay on my way home from the Legislature. Sure signs that spring is on its way. We are 5 weeks into the Legislative session and things are happening fast and furiously. We are so appreciative to all of you who respond to Patti's emails and contact your elected representatives on the Hill as the issues morph and change. We are the experts in public education and for the most part, our Legislators respect the knowledge that we have and look for our voice in these complex issues. The JLC as a body takes its charge seriously to represent the our various regions and as a group, we are having a impact in the education discussion. Keep up the good work!

Another sure sign of spring is our annual spring Regional Training meetings. These will be held the last week of March, first week of April, so look for your invitation in the mail. The other officers and I really enjoy the opportunity to travel the state and visit with you in your districts and regions. We learn so much and appreciate all the hard work that you are doing. It's a great thing to be associated with such fine individuals! I don't know if March will come in like a lion or a lamb, but I do know that that it will be a great month for public ed!

Thanks for all you do,
Nancy

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

It is amazing that we are already in March of 2016. The good thing is that we are nearly done with our state legislative session. I hope in the end our public neighborhood schools will have fared well enough to move forward with good things for kids. Every year seems to be a challenge.

There are two very timely issues that I would like to share with you involving things on the national level. First, we have been very active as your Pacific Region representatives on the NSBA board of directors. The Pacific Region currently consists of these states: Utah, Idaho, Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada. The three directors are myself, Frank Pugh from Calif., and Anne Ritter from Idaho. Over the last 3 years our collective voices have been heard and have made a great impact on important issues on the national scene. The Pacific Region determined last year that we would put forth one of our directors to run for the position of Secretary Treasure of NSBA. It has been around 15 years since we last had someone representing our region and that, of course, was our own Mossi White. We determined that Frank Pugh, from California, would be an excellent choice.

Safety Spotlight - Ripple Effect of an Injury

Sometimes when I think about the people who are injured at work, my thoughts turn to the ripple effect created by an injury. We don’t always realize that an injury has a far reaching impact on a school, as well as the district. The impact goes well beyond the injured employee. It reminds me of one of my favorite poems.
