The Board Bulletin November 2016

Congratulations to Kristi Swett Recently Elected Vice-Chair of the Pacific Region

At a recent meeting held in San Jose, California, Kristi was elected as the Vice-Chair of the Pacific Region of NSBA. She defeated the other nominee from California and will begin her service on January 1, 2017.  The Pacific Region represents the States of Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The Officers of the school boards associations of those States meet twice a year to discuss relevant education topics and to advance policies and resolutions that are important to States in our region to the National School Boards Association. We know Kristi will be a strong voice for USBA, all school boards, and for children. Congratulations Kristi!

A Letter from USBA's President,
Nancy Kennedy

I grew up in a political family, I loved campaigning, the door to door conversations and debates and waiting for the results, late at night at the county courthouse with the local newspaper reporters.

That all seems like a faded relic now, with instant polls, online reports and Twitter and Facebook feeds. I still get excited each November though and if you’re in the thick of final campaign mode, I wish you well. (I’m unopposed this time and very grateful for that happy fact!)

This election will bring many new faces and new ideas to public education. There could be 60 new school board members, new state school board members and new members of the Legislature. We need to welcome these newly elected officials and be in the forefront of explaining educational policy and helping these elected officials understand the many needs and opportunities of public education.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

Greetings to all of our wonderful board members across the state. I am sure you are all as engaged in the election process as I am with many of you up for re-election, bonds to be passed, propositions discussed, and just who will we vote for for President!!
On the national level both NSBA and NSBAC have been very active in the election with continual debate, discussion, and briefs on issues that will affect our public schools and especially the children. Our staff is constantly on Capital Hill or attending briefings and committee meetings to engage with other educational leaders and elected officials concerning oversight of implementation of ESSA, legislation to modernize the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, and re-authorization for child nutrition programs. These are all priorities that Congress has sought to advance for our schools this year.
