The Board Bulletin January 2016

A Letter from USBA's President,
Kristi Swett

Welcome 2016! I hope all of you enjoyed a safe and happy New Year celebration. Let's all start this new year off with a bang at our state conference in Salt Lake City on the 7th, 8th and 9th at the Little America. The officers, USBA staff and Board of Directors are looking forward to seeing all of you, reconnecting and enjoying all the conference has to offer our members this year.

I want to say a big thank you to everyone who picked up the phone, called Washington, and told our congressional representatives how we felt about passing the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Because of the collective efforts of school board members and Superintendents nationwide, President Obama signed the act into law on December 10th! I know, through all of your efforts our voice was heard!

I believe this is a significant move forward for local governance, strengthening our state and local school boards to address the needs of our students, parents and communities without the prescriptive requirements of No Child Left Behind. Now the next stage of work begins, but together, hopefully our state will move forward for the children of our state.

As we all know, 2016 is another election year. I want to issue a CALL TO ACTION to all of our USBA members to get involved this election cycle! We need a stronger traditional public school voice to be heard at the Republican and Democratic Conventions.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

Happy New Year to my fellow board members, superintendents and business administrators. I trust your holiday was peaceful and somewhat restful. It is hard to believe we are now starting off the 2016 year. I have great hope that we will be able to make strong and thoughtful influences as the upfront leaders of public education in Utah. We can have power as we work together for the best possible outcomes in student learning. I am grateful to work with each of you.
On the national front as you know congress has been active in the Reauthorization of ESEA with the new ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act). NSBA staff, particularly our legislative staff have been very influential in helping mold some quality changes that will directly benefit local governance for our school districts. Michael Zola (legislative director of NSBA) has led his team’s efforts in being a constant voice for school board members across the country in helping our congressmen know the changes that needed to happen in bringing governance back to our communities.

Safety Spotlight - The Ice Man Cometh

During cold weather months, slips and falls on snow and ice have always been the most common and costly type of accident that happens to Utah school employees. This year is no exception. We have already had a couple of winter storms, which have predictably resulted in quite a few slip and fall claims involving snow and ice.
