A Letter from USBA's President,
Kristi Swett
Recently our Board of Directors participated in two team-building exercises, which provided us opportunities to work together to complete the task as well as encourage each member to contribute to the team. It was amazing to watch each team pull together quickly, strategize, work, and re-work their plan before diving in when the countdown began. The room was bursting with energy from start to finish!
Team-building activities can be a powerful way to unite a board, develop strengths, and address weaknesses - but only if the activities are planned and carried out strategically. There has to be a real purpose behind the decision to do the activity.
The most important step when planning a team-building activity comes at the very beginning: you must start by figuring out what challenges your board faces. Choose activities that will be effective in helping work through these issues.
Spend time thinking about your board’s strengths, identify any issues which need attention and what may be the root of any problems.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg
This has been a little quieter month after the busy month of March with board meetings, the Delegate Assembly, and the Annual Conference. The staff has been concentrating on the sale of our building and now leasing some space from the new owner. The decision to do this by the NSBA board and Executive Director was to secure funding for the pension plans that were created several years ago. This has been a very difficult but belt tightening procedure to maintain the integrity of NSBA in serving our school board members nationwide while becoming fiscally sound within the organization.
This past week we had our NSBAC board meeting of which I am a member and was elected as President of this board. NSBAC is the 501c4 arm of NSBA. It does not have non-profit status so we are able to be more aggressive on Capitol Hill legislatively. I am looking forward to the possibilities of things we will be able to do in behalf of school board members and public education on the national level.
Our next board meeting will be in June and I look forward to the committee work I am involved with.

"Don't Learn Safety by Accident"
These wise words headline the new USBA Loss Control safety poster. The campaign is called “LOOK 4” and highlights 4 of the most common types of injuries that occur in our schools. Each of the 4 hazards is captured with a picture, which illustrates a common type of the hazard.
