The Board Bulletin February 2016

A Letter from USBA's New President,
Nancy Kennedy

It’s February! The snow is swirling, the skiing is good this year and hot chocolate is particularly tasty at the end of a long day. I love the crispness of the air and the blue, blue skies that we see after storms. It’s also the start of the Legislative Session and many discussions and decisions are being had that affect our districts and abilities to educate the children in our classes. Some of our members are actively involved in the process, some follow the updates from Patti and contact legislators on specific issues and some just wait for the fallout in March. There’s a part for all of us to play in this process.

The first step, is to plan to attend the Day on the Hill, Friday, February 19th. This is a chance to hear from key legislators, listen to concerns that affect us all and visit with your local representatives. This is well planned, a great opportunity to get one on one time with busy representatives and if you’re nervous about getting around the Capital, there a lots of other USBA members that can give you pointers and show you which doors to wait by. The second step is to attend one of the JLC meetings held on Fridays at 11am. There are assigned voting members of this committee, but you can come and listen and participate in the discussions about the bills that will impact us all.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

Winter Storm Jonas-  After arriving in Washington DC and at my hotel on Wednesday, January 20th for board meetings and our NSBA Advocacy Institute I received an email from our NSBA staff saying that the Institute had been postponed and we were to get return flights to home for Friday morning. Yes, me and 30,000 others trying to leave the Washington DC area before Jonas hit Friday afternoon. I was, however, successful in retaining a flight. We ended up having a few committee meetings and our board meeting on Thursday from 8 am – 9:30 pm. The worst part was packing two suitcases for 6 days of business meetings and only needing clothes for one day…..!?

Although we were unable to hold our Advocacy Institute we have rescheduled for June. My hope is we will be able to bring back our National Congressmen and Senators to speak on many areas of education particularly the new ESSA. We also will be participating through our NSBAC organization in the political scene especially those candidates running for President. I will keep you posted on this but you can see the involvement on Twitter and other social media at @NSBActionCenter.
