Maunalani Receives Silver National Quality Award

Staff from Maunalani Nursing and Rehabilitation Center this week received the Silver National Quality Award at the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living Convention and Expo in Nashville.

HAH Director of Post-Acute Care Robert Choy was on hand to congratulate CEO Sai Chantavy and members of her team. Dr. David Gifford, AHCA/NCAL Chief Medical Officer also congratulated the team, as did Amy Lee, CEO/Administrator, of Aloha Nursing and Rehab Centre.

Maunalani now qualifies to apply for the Gold National Quality Award, which is achieved by few skilled nursing facilities in the nation. Only two received the distinction this year.

Happy Ombuds Day!

This week marked the fifth annual Ombuds Day, which was created to recognize the important role ombudsmen play, and the impact they have on people’s lives.

Originating in Sweden as an independent official to investigate complaints against government officials and agencies, ombudsmen have taken on a variety of roles in their jobs, and adapted to a variety of needs over the last 200 years. In the U.S., the State Long-Term Care (LTC) Ombudsman Program is funded by the Administration for Community Living, an operating division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The program takes an advocacy-oriented approach. Each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam has an Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman led by a full-time state ombudsman. (For Hawaii, it is John McDermott, LSW, ACSW, M. Div) Under authority provided through the Older Americans Act, the offices investigate and resolve complaints about nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other residential care settings.
