  • The Montgomery County Planning Board recently approved preliminary plans, submitted by Matan Companies, to transform their existing office park in Germantown into a vibrant, 24/7 mixed-use town center. The project site, currently known as Milestone Business Park, is located on Milestone Center Drive, just north of I-270 and west of Ridge Road. The site will comprise 1,200,500 square feet of development, including 655,000 square feet of existing office space in four buildings, three new six-story mixed-use residential buildings with 485 apartment units, 28,250 square feet of new street-level retail space, and 3,161 total parking spaces. An existing, centrally located 63,000 square foot plaza will also be transformed to create an attractive gathering space for the project, and will feature an interactive water fountain, a kiosk, seat walls, lawn areas and more.   • The National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition has declared August as Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Action Month. Pepco reminds its customers they have numerous options to apply for energy assistance including LIHEAP, which provides critical home heating and cooling assistance to those who qualify. Customers can apply starting Oct. 1 through a network of local agencies. In Maryland, LIHEAP funds are administered by the Department of Human Resources (DHR) through the Office of Home Energy Programs. To apply for any of these programs, contact the Local Home Energy Programs Office in your area or call 1-800-352-1446 or click here.
  • Montgomery Village Foundation is hosting its first Touch-A-Truck event on Saturday, August 29th from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at the North Creek Community Center, 20125 Arrowhead Road. The premise behind the event is to put on display a wide assortment of unique vehicles, heavy equipment and trucks for kids to climb on, honk horns, "drive" and explore.   • The Gaithersburg Police Department, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is asking citizens to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, Saturday, September 26. No liquids or syringes will be accepted. The service is free, anonymous, and there will be no questions asked.  From 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, the Gaithersburg Police station, located at 14 Fulks Corner Avenue, will serve as a collection station, giving residents an opportunity to dispose of all unwanted and unused prescription drugs.
  • eWomenNetwork announced its 2015 grant recipient - Community Bridges, Incorporated, a Silver Spring based nonprofit that empowers low income, minority and immigrant girls to become exceptional students, positive leaders and healthy young women.
