Prizes from Japan, Kurdistan & Argentina alongside 8 upcoming festivals in November.

Three more awards for A WORLD NOT OURS

As many of you will have read, October 2013 was our busiest month on the festival circuit, with screenings at 16 separate events on multiple continents. To top off this achievement we received three, very special, awards.

The first came from Japan, at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival where the film faced down some of the year's top documentaries and picked up The Robert and Frances Flaherty Prize (The Grand Prize). Often referred to as the "Palme d'Or of documentary" the trophy has taken pride of place at Nakba HQ!

Next to Iraqi Kurdistan, where A WORLD NOT OURS was honoured with the Best New Talent award at the Duhok International Film Festival. Jury president, Bela Tarr, was particularly impressed with the film and in their statement the jury (pictured below) commended the film "for dealing with existential uncertainties in a complex political background."

Last, but certainly not least, news came though on the Nakba hotline that A WORLD NOT OURS took the Best Feature Film award at the Cinemigrante film festival in Buenos Aires. This award tops off a very well received run at festivals in Argentina and is hopefully a sign of more good things to come.

DOX:LAB / New project development

Before letting you know about our upcoming festivals, Nakba FilmWorks would like to announce the first of many steps towards our next film project. As part of the development process writer/director Mahdi Fleifel has been selected to be part of the prestigious DOX:LAB program which takes place during the CPH:DOX festival in November.

DOX:LAB is a cross-cultural program for a selected number of filmmakers from EU and from non EU-countries focused on training, project development and subsequent pitching events at the international co-production markets, with further aim of establishing international network and long-term professional relationships.

Mahdi will be teaming up with Indian film-maker Umesh Kulkarni to develop and produce a film which will be shown at next year's CPH:DOX. It is our desire to use this as an opportunity to explore themes and techniques for future productions. You can find out more about the program and teams in the DOX:LAB catalogue.
