UN Habitat & Norway Govt Visit Mukuru, Kenya

The Norwegian Minister for International Development, Mr. Heikki Holmas, and UN Habitat Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos, visited Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums to tour a selection of the Kenyan Alliance's ongoing projects, including housing, sanitation, large-scale relocation, layout planning, and secure tenure projects, and to share their thoughts and experiences with the communities.

Making Change from the Pavements of Mumbai

After nearly 30 years, the women of Byculla have finally begun to move into their own homes. SDI will cover this important story with a series of blog posts documenting the journey from living on the pavements of Mumbai, being among the poorest and most vulnerable populations of the city and suffering the constant threat of demolitions, to creating the spark that evolved into a national, and then international, movement of the urban poor.

Strong Leadership in Philippines' Urban Areas 


SDI Coordinator Celine d'Cruz describes how strong leadership from the Philippines Homeless People's Federation is helping the urban poor cope with climatic disasters; how federations of the urban poor in the Philippines are helping families affected by floods rebuild their lives after Typhoon Durian.

In South Africa, Constitutional Court Victory for Displaced Families

After more than four months of legal proceedings, the South African Constitutional Court delivered a ruling in favor of the families displaced as a result of evictions in the Marlboro South section of Johannesburg in August. This ruling rendered the actions of the City of Johannesburg as unlawful and laid the groundwork for a meaningful engagement going forward.
