Demand rent-hike protection is extended to all Ontario tenants

The time is now to pressure the Ontario Liberal government to make an important change in the lives of tenants by ending the 1991 rent control exemption.

The NDP is introducing a bill today to end the 1991 exemption, which has fueled the affordable rental housing crisis in our province.

The 1991 exemption allows landlords to raise rents by any amount they wish, as long as their rental unit was first occupied after November 1, 1991. This exemption permits unregulated rents in condos, purpose-built rentals and basement apartments. Tenants are experiencing rent hikes of varying amounts, some upwards of $1000 per month.

Enough is enough.

Demand that the Liberal government end this unfair rent control exemption. Click below to send an email to the Premier Kathleen Wynne and Chris Ballard, Ontario's Housing Minister.
