"The Case for Easter"

Did you know that the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation of our faith?  If Easter Sunday never happened, Christianity would have probably been just another passing fad in the history of the world.

But the fact is that Easter Sunday did happen.  Jesus rose from the dead!  And he paid the ultimate price with his life so that death was no longer victorious over our lives, and that we may have an eternal hope in following the Son of God.

Strangely, though, in all four gospels (and anywhere in the New Testament for that matter), no one actually witnessed the resurrection.  No one saw Jesus rise from death nor did they see him come out of the tomb.  Even atheists would be quick to point this out.

Everything we know, understand, and believe about the resurrection is based on the after-effects of the actual resurrection: the message of the angels to the women, the empty tomb, and especially the encounters with the Risen Lord.

Perhaps the point of the resurrection was not to be so obvious.  For example, when Jesus walked with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, it was not obvious that the Lord was walking with them.  He was only revealed to them "in the breaking of the bread."  They recognized Him through an experience, not through evidence.

We believe not because we have seen, but rather, because we experience Christ's resurrection when we willingly take up our cross and follow Him.  The season of Lent leads us through this experience.  We can learn much about the extraordinary power of faith from the lack of "evidence" of the resurrection.

"For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father." (Matthew 16:17)
