DOCTalks 2014 Videos Are Up!

The DOCTalks website has been updated with all of the 2014 Keynote Speaker and Panel Discussions on Vimeo!

The 2015 DOCTalks Festival & Symposium will be held in June instead of February. In large part because of winter weather, but also it’s a better time of the year for a wider variety of interested persons and organizations to attend DOCTalks.

In association with St. Thomas University Office of Research Services, DOCTalks received a SSHRC Connections grant to do community outreach meetings across Atlantic Canada this summer – to promote the DOCTalks concept.

DOCTalks Community Meetings – August/ September 2014

The community outreach meetings will take place in the following locations and university campuses where academic researchers, documentary filmmakers, not-for-profit officials and other interested people and organizations will be invited.

Open Government Advocate Set to Speak at GovMaker Conference

A high profile technology officer is coming to New Brunswick this fall to speak on the topic of open government.

The New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network is bringing in Beth Noveck, the former White House deputy chief technology officer under President Barack Obama, to share her expertise on the topic.

Typically, open government is broken down into three main principles: collaboration, accountability and transparency.

The area involves making available the data information within government to the broader public. It also means opening up the processes of government and governance toward a more participatory democracy.

Noveck is coming for the research network’s inaugural GovMaker conference, being held Nov. 24-25 at the Crowne Plaza in Fredericton.

Data Innovation 101

The topic of data-driven innovation is so new that many terms are poorly understood. These include “big data,” “open data,” “data science,” and “cloud computing.”

“Big data” refers to data that cannot be processed using traditional database systems, either due to the relative size and heterogeneity of the data set, or the speed at which it is updated. Big data has existed for decades in fields such as astronomy and atmospheric science, but the growth of digital data collection has rapidly brought the topic into many other fields. In some areas, big data technologies have allowed researchers to analyze entire populations, without having to rely on samples; in addition to enabling faster analysis, this has also resulted in increased model accuracy....

Help us Populate our Research Catalogue

Aidez-nous à enrichir notre catalogue de recherche
When asked how we could improve access to research in our last survey, our members (you!) offered a few suggestions, for example, that NBSPRN could “serve as a depository of references to articles published using NB data” or that we could “compile a database of New Brunswick studies that span social, environmental and cultural issues both historic and contemporary”.

To do this, we have decided to create a “Research Catalogue” of articles related to social and economic policy published by none other than you!

Click here to find out more!
