A high profile technology officer is coming to New Brunswick this fall to speak on the topic of open government.

The New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network is bringing in Beth Noveck, the former White House deputy chief technology officer under President Barack Obama, to share her expertise on the topic.

Typically, open government is broken down into three main principles: collaboration, accountability and transparency.

The area involves making available the data information within government to the broader public. It also means opening up the processes of government and governance toward a more participatory democracy.

Noveck is coming for the research network’s inaugural GovMaker conference, being held Nov. 24-25 at the Crowne Plaza in Fredericton.

The topic of data-driven innovation is so new that many terms are poorly understood. These include “big data,” “open data,” “data science,” and “cloud computing.”

“Big data” refers to data that cannot be processed using traditional database systems, either due to the relative size and heterogeneity of the data set, or the speed at which it is updated. Big data has existed for decades in fields such as astronomy and atmospheric science, but the growth of digital data collection has rapidly brought the topic into many other fields. In some areas, big data technologies have allowed researchers to analyze entire populations, without having to rely on samples; in addition to enabling faster analysis, this has also resulted in increased model accuracy....

The New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network attended the 3rd edition of the International Summer Course on the Rights of the Child organized by the Office of Child and Youth Advocate, which took place at the University of Moncton 11 to 18 July 2014.

The course is an annual event that includes a bilingual education program on children rights by focusing on an article of United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Le Réseau de recherche sur les politiques sociales du Nouveau-Brunswick assista à la 3e édition du Cours d’été international relatif aux droits de l’enfant organisé par le Bureau du défenseur des enfants et de la jeunesse qui eu lieu à l’Université de Moncton du 11 au 18 juillet 2014.

Le cours est un événement annuel qui comprend un programme d’études bilingue sur les droits de l’enfant en se concentrant sur un article de la Convention des droits de l’enfant des Nations Unies.
