Meet a Match

Meet one of BBBSO's new 2017 matches - Big Brother Michael and Little Brother Gary (7 years old). Thanks to the generosity of a private donor, they recently attended an Ottawa Senators game together.

When they're not out exploring museums and attending hockey games, Michael helps Gary learn to read.

We look forward to seeing their relationship grow and develop into a meaningful friendship.

Big Spelling Bee

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada once again partnered with Invesco Canada and E.W. Scripps Company to promote academic excellence with regional spelling bees.

Thanks to additional funding by Invesco, the regional bee was expanded and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa held the first "pilot" Big Spelling Bee for the Ottawa and Montreal regions.

Sixteen youth in grades 3 to 8 from Katimavik Elementary School, Leslie Park Elementary School, Roslyn Elementary school, Westwind Public School, Edward Murphy Elementary School and Royal Vale School competed for a chance to win an all expenses paid trip to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to Jaden Zhang from Westwind Public School! Jaden won the competition by spelling the word lariat. We wish him the best of luck next month in Washington.

Special thanks to pronouncer, Matthew Healy, emcee Megan McCorkle, our three judges Laura Bauman, Kimberly Esdaille, and Emily Azevedo and to Councillor Keith Egli for supporting our event.
