On Big Brothers Big Sisters Day, September 18th, BBBS Canada was proud to launch a new brand for the organization!

The plan is clear: Ignite the Power of 3 - support young people’s family, our mentoring coordinators, and our Bigs (volunteer mentors).  These are the three players that come together to forge a new path forward with every young person in our program. See the 3 big players represented in our new logo and BBBSC wave.

With this we’re asking you, your friends, family, coworkers, and every Canadian to be a part of something bigger. With more people, more volunteers, and more donors involved, Big Brothers Big Sisters can ignite the power and potential of thousands of more young people across Canada.

New Vision, New Mission, New Big Brothers Big Sisters!

A 106-year old organization has been reinvented and reintroduced to the world with a sweet new look. We’ve up’d the swagger, boosted the cool and switched up our style.

Music: "All I Need" by Shad.

Did you know it costs $1500 to create one Big/Little match? There are 60 young people in Ottawa waiting for you to support them & believe in their potential. By making a gift today, you will help provide mentors to children and youth in the Ottawa community who need it the most.
These mentors will provide much needed support and friendship to these children and youth and help guide them on the right path. We have extended our BBBS Month campaign to include October - will you donate & #IgnitePotential today?

Big For A Day 2019

Big for a Day 2019 was once again not only a success, but a complete blast for both our Littles and our Honourary Bigs! On BBBS Day September 18th, local friends of BBBSO from the community signed on to spend a day with a Little, planning fun activities and capping their time off with lunch out on the town!

We want to thank all our Littles and of course our Honourary Bigs for a Day for supporting us and making this such a fun annual event!

BeYou, a campaign which took place in September is wrapped for another year but all the tools and resources are STILL AVAILABLE on the BeYouGirl website!

BeYou is a national cause marketing campaign created to increase self-esteem and empower females aged 9 to 16 years across Canada. Developed by Morguard and presented in its portfolio of 21 shopping centres, BeYou gives young girls access to personal and professional development tools, while celebrating their growth, diversity and self-worth.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada was a key partner in the program, which held events across Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

Check out this awesome video of Little Tiegen and her Big Sandra, and be sure to check out BeYou on social media - Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram!

Big Alison and Little Tanya

"Tanya and I were recently matched and quickly jumped into getting to know each other. We’ve already done a lot of fun activities, including visiting the experimental farm, playing card games, apple picking and baking apple crisp with the apples we picked."

"Getting to know Tanya has been great. She has a hilarious sense of humour and is very grateful and polite. In getting to know Tanya I’ve learned that she wants to be a graphic author, so I’ve encouraged her to start working on an idea for a book. I think it’s safe to say we are both very excited for our future outings, whether it’s simply chatting during a visit to the library or organizing a visit to another museum."
- Big Alison

Thank You Home Hardware!

For the month of September when customers purchased a 5 pack of Lawn and Leaf Paper Yard Waste Bags at select Home Hardware locations, Home Hardware donated $0.50 to Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa!

This was the second year that the community-minded hardware chain encouraged customers to take care of their lawn and garden needs while giving back to their community!

For Manotick store owner Adam, this cause is very personal as he used to be a Big Brother.

We are super grateful for their contributions, which are still being tallied!

Did you happen to catch the students of Carleton University's JDCC Sprott school down in the Byward Market on September 28th?  They might have been dancing perhaps?  This awesome group was rockin' it out to once again raise funds to support mentorship matches at BBBSO!  This has become an annual tradition and we think it's fabulous!  Thanks JDCC Sprott!

What a day!  Big Brothers Big Sisters Day 2019 kicked off in the morning with our Breakfast Fundraiser at the National Arts Centre where BBBSO launched its new national brand and met up with an amazing array of fantastic Ottawa community members who support BBBSO!

Thank you to Deputy Mayor Laura Dudas who not only attended but declared September 18th Big Brothers Big Sisters Day officially in the City of Ottawa!

The event was beautifully emcee'd by National Youth Mentoring Advisory Council member Karine Pomilia Gauthier and co-chaired by former Little Alexandre Malboeuf and singer/songwriter and BBBSO supporter Tara Shannon - thank you all for a job amazingly well done!

And a huge thank you to our table captains, our speakers, our donors and everyone who attended, including our Bigs and Littles!

Lee Ann and her Little, Dustin, have been on quite a ride together.

"I have had the privilege of being a part of Dustin’s life and watching him grow into the caring, funny, open and hard working young man he is today.  He has had to over come insurmountable obstacles in his life and he always has a positive attitude and a drive to keep going.  His smile can light up the world".- Lee Ann Rooney, Big and former BBBSO employee

Lee Ann met Dustin when he was 12. He was a participant at an after school program that Lee Ann ran through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County. Lee Ann started in-school mentoring Dustin for that school year - his mom was very sick at the time and unfortunately, she passed away.

Soon after, Lee Ann transitioned from an in-school match to a couples match with her (now) ex-husband. Dustin became part of their family and the trio spent quality time together every week for years. When Lee Ann and her husband separated, Dustin was 17 and their 'official' couples match ended, but Lee Ann kept up her relationship with Dustin and has stayed in regular contact with him ever since.

Today, Dustin is 25 and lives in Banff, Alberta. Earlier this year, he was in a horrible snowboarding accident where he sustained serious head injuries. Dustin had a long stay in the hospital with a number of surgeries to reconstruct his face. Lee Ann traveled to Banff to see him during this time.

It was a tough road but Dustin has now made a full recovery and is back to work!

"Being a Little Brother has been a life changing experience; so many life long memories and experiences. It's been an a amazing time getting to become part of another family and for them to become such great impacts on my life. I wouldn't change anything for the world and highly recommend Big Brothers Big Sisters to every person I know. I love talking about all of the great experiences that we get to have!" - Little Dustin, now 25
