News from Chez Rambo, September 30 edition

If you'd like to see full details of the trip to Beijing and Chengdu, you can find the writeup here and the picture album on Facebook. It was GLORIOUS and amazing, and I am definitely returning next year for the Chinese Nebulas again.

Recent Publications and News:

  • I just finished proofing both sides of Neither Here Nor There. Mark Tripp, who did the wonderful Near + Far art,  came through despite vision difficulties with new artwork for the book, which is awesome, and the publisher is planning a special limited hardcover boxed set to go with the regular trade paperback. The release date is December 15, 2016; I believe Hydra House will have some advance copies available at World Fantasy Convention.
  • "Red in Tooth and Cog" will be appearing in translation in the Chinese SF magazine, Science Fiction World. I'm very excited about my first appearance in Chinese and happy to be able to share a favorite story with new readers. I hope this will be the first of many translations into Chinese.
  • Noteworthy in SFWA news is that the organization has made a formal statement about the Hungarian magazine, Galaktika. I've included some follow up details on my blog here.
Forthcoming Appearances:

For a little while I thought I had finished most of my travel, but then I looked at the calendar. Yikes! Still miles to go before I sleep.
  • The first weekend of October I'll be in South Bend, Indiana, appearing at Griffcon.
  • Two weeks after that, I will be at the Surrey Writers International Conference in British Columbia, Canada. I will be giving one of the keynote speeches!
  • Mid-November, I will be in the Chicago area for a workshop on nonprofit stuff.
  • After that I'll be at Orycon, and will post that schedule soon. If you're curious about SFWA, please consider coming to the meeting at 10 that Sunday morning.
  • At the end of November I will be in the Philadelphia area for a family visit. I'm hoping to get over to the Couer d'Alene area in December or January.
  • Alas, I will not be appearing at Superstars next year. I will post other 2017 details as they manifest, but overall I am planning significantly less travel than in 2016 and will not be appearing at cons unless they're defraying at least part of my costs.
Here's the cover to Neither Here Nor There, a collection of fantasy short stories from Hydra House, which will be available on December 15th in both physical and electronic form.

Class News:
  • On October 1, Rachel Swirsky and Juliette Wade will launch their classes in the Rambo Academy for Wayward Writers. The following week I'll be announcing four single session workshops for October-December: the long-promised space opera class with Ann Leckie, live classes with Swirsky and Wade, and one solo workshop. Is there something you want me to teach before 2017 in that last slot? Look over the list here and then let me know which you think I should teach when you send in your giveaway entry.
  • I am teaching a live workshop for Clarion West here in Seattle on November 20. The workshop focuses on revisioning and rewriting and is almost full now. Here's the link.
  • I will release the Jan-March live class schedule in early December.
Market News: Changes to the Newsletter and Patreon Campaign:

Getting a weekly newsletter out seems beyond my organizational skills, so I'm bumping the frequency down to every two weeks, which at least means you'll get giveaway mentions twice. Speaking of which, I have very few entries, so your chances are quite good for September's! I'm posting this version of the newsletter publicly so people can see a (somewhat) representative sample. You must be a newsletter subscriber or Patreon supporter to enter the giveaway.

The newsletter will continue to feature publication and class news, information on upcoming appearances and opportunities, the monthly giveaway, and market news and tips.

The Patreon campaign is going back to private posts, a decision I'm basing on the fact that I've been writing fewer short stories (and expect that trend to continue for at least eight more months), the lack of results from making some stories public, and the effect public posts have on the subsequent sales of the work. I will be posting a short story to Patreon subscribers later on today; it's a brief fable I wrote the majority of while sitting on the Great Wall. If you like what I'm doing and want me to keep on doing it, supporting the campaign financially or by spreading word of it is the most useful way (to me) for you to do it. Thank you.

September Giveaway:

September's giveaway is a signed copy of Cyber World: Tales of Humanity's Tomorrow, a new anthology featuring my story, "The Rest Between the Notes." I'll toss in a bunch of the promotional stuff they just sent me: stickers, a bubble gum pack with trading card, bookmark, and a Hex Publishers bracelet. To enter the giveaway, mail me at with the subject line "September 2016 giveaway" by midnight PST September 30 (TONIGHT), 2016. This giveaway is only open to newsletter subscribers and Patreon supporters.

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you know who might be interested. They can find the signup link for the newsletter here. Thanks for your support and encouragement. Happy writing to you all.
