Walk on Wales

From Ceredigion to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

Following a fond farewell to West Wales, the walkers have received a rapturous reception in Ceredigion and North Pembrokeshire, not only from every town and village they have passed through, but also from the marine wildlife in the form of seals and dolphins, with a seal joining the drum head service on the beach at Abercastle! Jim Salmon would especially like to thank his family for their support and his wonderful team, Paddy Dewaine, Andrew Davies and Les Owen, who led the walkers from New Quay in Ceredigion along the magnificent coastline to Whitesands Bay in Pembrokeshire and have now handed the baton on to Mal Davies and Team 8.

A Million Thanks.....

To Charles Howells from Fishguard Holiday Park for their cheque for £1,000; to Riverlea, Aberporth Community Council, the Aberporth Royal British Legion and the Mayor of Newport for all of their kind donations and the many others we received along the way; to the children and residents of Aberporth who lined the streets to welcome the walkers, amazing; to the local dignitaries and communities of Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire who came out to welcome the walkers wherever they went. Special thanks also to Caffi Patio in Llangrannog, the wonderful ladies in Mwnt, the Shed Fish & Chip Bistro in Porthgain and St David's Fire Station for providing the walkers with much appreciated sustenance and refreshments along the way. And last, but by no means least, a huge thank you Celtic Camping and Lanlas Farm Cottages for the wonderful accommodation they provided for the walkers.

Blessing by the Bishop of St David's

In a very poignant and moving end to Stage 7, the Rt Rev Wyn Evans, Bishop of St David's, together with people from St Davids' greeted the walkers at Whitesands Bay.  Following a short drum head service on the beach, the walkers then went with Bishop Wyn to St David's Cathedral where a special blessing was held at the shrine of St David within St David's Cathedral and where the Welsh Guards Colours were laid up in 1950.

Over to Team 8

Team 8 is being led by Mal Davies who joined the Battalion in 1970. Joining Mal are Steve Liversage and Kevin Williams, both ex-Welsh Guardsmen, and Andrew Raison.  Andrew is an experienced walker and mountaineer, so 86 miles along the Pembrokeshire coastline should not be too great a challenge for him...unlike the rest of us!

We would like to thank Finton Godkin and Ian Griffiths for organising the Brawl in Berea which took place at Celtic Camping last Friday in aid of Walk on Wales.  Our thanks also go to Bluestone Resort who held the Butterfly Ball at Bluestone at the weekend and have generously donated all the money raised to WOW.  Alison and the WOW team can be seen here with the Elvis look-alike who performed that evening!

Great to See...

We were delighted to welcome the families of Gdsm Nigel Rowberry and LSgt Pez Thomas and also to receive a letter from the family of LCpl Barry Bullers which was read out at the drum head service on his day.  There were so many ex-Welsh Guards who came to join us during Stage 7, it would take the whole Newsletter to mention them all!  But it was wonderful to see so many old friends joining the Walk and also to welcome Stephen Crabb, MP for Preseli and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales and Paul Davies AM, Deputy Leader of the Welsh Assembly Conservative Group & Shadow Minister for Finance, who walked with us from St Dogmeals.

Cardiff Half Marathon Runner....

Dominic Lonergan's wife, Sian, completed the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday in a very impressive time of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 30 seconds and raised £545.00 for Walk on Wales.  Congratulations Sian on a fantastic achievement and a big thank you from us all.

Remember, Remember to Sign up for 2nd November!

Everyone who wants to walk with us for the final 6 miles from Swanbridge to Cardiff Bay, please remember to register on the website in order that we have an accurate idea of numbers.  Thank you.
