Walk on Wales

Goodbye Llyn, Hello West Wales.....

The weeks are really flying by and here we are at the start of Stage 6, nearly half way through the Walk.  Stage 5 was, as with all the Stages, an amazing experience; Steve Jones led us from the very tip of the Llyn Peninsula, past Abersoch, Pwllheli, a Criccieth Castle shrouded in mist, Portmeirion and on to Harlech.  As the glorious summer gives way to autumn, it has rained a little and shone a little, but the spirit of the Walk prevails regardless.  Jan, Rod, Chris and Alison have now walked 450 miles, with 470 still to go.  Henry Vaughan-Jones took to the stage in Hafan Y Mor with a stunning rendition of Calon Lân.

A Million Thanks.....

Huge thanks go to our Stage 5 sponsors, Robinsons Brewery who have been wonderfully generous – the Board walked with us for a day and then William Robinson and his family came back to join us again at the weekend.  Thanks also, to our day sponsors: Steve Chappell and the Market Fit Group (who magnanimously increased their sponsorship from 2 to 3 days), Serco Health, Acorn Care, the Fisher Partnership and the Coach & Horses Pub in Harrogate.  Equally huge thanks go to Jonathan & Helen Williams-Ellis for their superb hospitality and hosting us at their wonderful holiday cottages at Glasfryn, near Criccieth.

Our thanks also go to John Allport, Gdsm C Allport's father, who so generously fed all the walkers with the most delicious fish and chips in Pwllheli; John Burns who provided coffee, tea and bacon rolls for all the walkers and organised two race nights at Haven Holidays, Hafan Y Mor, Pwllhell and also Pam Lloyd-George and the landlord of the Prince of Wales in Criccieth for the amazing lunch they provided for more than 50 walkers on Saturday!

Stage 6 Remembers our Afghanistan Fallen

Team 6 is led by Lt Col Andrew Speed, who was the Battalion Second-in-Command during the 2009 tour of Afghanistan.  He is supported by Giles Harris, a Company Commander in Afghanistan in 2009 and soon to be the next Commanding Officer of 1WG, and Gdsm Marcus Monaghan, veteran of two Afghan tours.  Also joining Andrew and his team are Andy Haines, father of LSgt David Haines and Paul Noble.  On this Stage we are remembering Pte John Brackpool, Lt Mark Evison, Maj Sean Birchall and LSgt Toby Fasfous who all died in Afghanistan in 2009, as well as Gdsm Gareth Nicholson and Gdsm Mike Marks who died in the Falklands.  Please come and join the team as they walk the stunning West Wales Coast from Harlech to New Quay.

Old Friends and New ....

As always, it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces joining the Walk on Stage 5. In addition to Steve Jones, Gareth Gibbs, Henry Vaughan-Jones and Mark Davies (Beanz), background banter and ribaldry was provided by more Welsh Guards comrades, namely Steve Williams 63, Leon James, Ken and Steve Chappell and a fleeting visit from Ciaran Rowlands. Jan's godson, Sam Bennett, who had travelled all the way from southern France with his family, was particularly honoured to carry the baton for the day in the absence of any family members of Gdsm Chris King.

Auction Lots and Raffle Prizes needed!

Ex-Guardsman, Dominic Lonergan, has sold out a staggering 450 tickets for the Walk on Wales Dinner at Cardiff Arms Park on Friday 8 November. This is the final Walk on Wales event and we intend to make it an evening to remember!  In order to maximise the fund-raising potential for Walk on Wales we need as many fantastic auction lots and raffle prizes as people are willing to donate. The more aspirational and attractive the prizes, the more money we will raise. Got a holiday home you can lend us? Tickets to a major sporting event? Know a celebrity chef or fine-dining restaurant that would provide dinner for a group of friends? Or for the raffle: fine wines, beauty treatments, meals out, a round of golf? Let's push the boat out, raise as much as we can and enjoy a great evening in the process!

And Don't Forget....

Walk on Wales Fun Day in Queen's Square, Wrexham this weekend on Saturday 28 September from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.  Bring your family and friends and join the fun!
