Winter snows have arrived in the Catskills. Are you prepared?

The past two days delivered lots of fresh snow, with about six to eight inches at lower elevations and much more on the peaks. While there are few hiking experiences more rewarding than walking in the brilliant tranquillity of a winter landscape in the Catskills, hikers need to be ready when they head onto the trails. Winter brings extra challenges that require rethinking what you pack, including extra clothing and food. Be sure to carry ice traction wear like microspikes, crampons and snowshoes. A fall can cause a serious injury, something that is made worse when you are miles into the wilderness far from a trailhead and assistance. Postholing (hiking in deep snow without snowshoes) is exhausting for you and creates hazards for others by making it harder to find good footing and by slowing progress at a time of year when days are short.
