The vigilante and spy culture, emboldened by the Texas anti-abortion law, undermines democracy and the constitution. The Supreme Court’s decision to let it stand until a legal case is submitted is breathtaking in its implications for similar actions in other states. It foreshadows comparable rulings by its ultra-conservative and Trump-appointed judges.
Texas’s new voter suppression laws demonstrate the urgency to ensure easy access to voting, non-partisan redistricting and election administration, and elimination of undisclosed funding, as well as federal oversight of election laws. Without a federal law that ensures these practices in every state, we can expect more of the same and worse.
Texas also demonstrates the interconnections between voting rights, election turnout gerrymandering, judge appointments, and big money that allows a minority to make decisions for the majority—in this case women!
Congress must pass The Freedom to Vote and John Lewis Voting Rights Acts or we can expect more draconian actions from gerrymandered state legislatures and the extreme right-leaning Supreme Court.
Join a phonebank this week to urge passage of these pro-democracy bills, no matter what it takes!
