The Gambling Information Resource Office is part of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation. GIRO alerts are designed to keep you up to date with the latest information including: new developments in research, policy, regulations and laws at local, state and federal government levels. It also includes decisions from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the courts. GIRO alerts also list upcoming events concerning gambling.

Foundation news

A comparative study of men and women gamblers in Victoria

A comparative study of men and women gamblers in Victoria was funded as part of the foundation's fourth round of the Grants for Gambling Research Program. The study by Nerilee Hing, Alex Russell, Barry Tolchard and Lia Nower examined the similarities and differences between men and women gamblers using data from the foundation's 2009 A Study of Gambling in Victoria.

Community news

Increasing the odds for safety and respect

Women’s Health in the North and Women’s Health East are inviting family violence, problem gambling and financial counselling and generalist service providers across their regions to one of three half-day consultations on ‘Increasing the odds for safety and respect.’ Consultations will discuss the relationship between family violence and gambling and their impact on service delivery to women.

Clayton CANVAS launch

The City of Monash is launching a new program to reduce gambling related harm in the Clayton community on 3 December 2014. Funded by the foundation, Clayton CANVAS includes a range of initiatives targeting groups at risk of developing gambling problems. Everyone is welcome to attend the launch.

Australian Gambling Statistics

The Queensland Government recently published the 30th edition of the Australian Gambling Statistics (AGS)which incorporates information up to and including the 2012–13 financial year. As the recognised, comprehensive set of national gambling statistics, it provides tables of figures across states and territories, as well as overviews and updates on legislation and regulation. New research

The role of anxiety and dissociation in young Australian gamblers

Recently published in the Journal of Gambling Studies, this study examined the role of anxiety and dissociated gambling as predictors of problem gambling among young Australians. Findings from the study indicate that when anxiety and disassociated gambling are both present, there is a higher degree of predicted problem gambling. A grounded theory of the influence of significant life events, psychological co-morbidities and related social factors on gambling involvement

Published in the International Journal of Mental Health Addiction, this article reports the findings of a study that investigated the relationships between gambling behaviour, significant life events, psychological conditions, social factors and gambling-related harm in gamblers. The study found recreational gamblers had strong social support networks compared to problem gamblers which helped them cope with negative life events. An exploratory study of interrelationships between social casino gaming, gambling and problem gambling

Published in the International Journal of Mental Health Addiction, this study explores the relationships between gambling, problem gambling and social casino games such as poker or bingo offered on Facebook. The study found involvement in social casino games did not appear to affect the likelihood of gambling or the risk of problem gambling. See GIRO’s recent research section for a summary.


News from the VCGLR

Recent VCGLR EGM licensing decisions

Bridge Inn Hotel: On 10 October 2014, the commission heard an application from Benmara Pty Ltd to increase the number of EGMs at the Bridge Inn Hotel from 40 to 60. The City of Whittlesea and the Whittlesea Inter-Agency Taskforce on Gambling opposed the application at the hearing. However, on 11 November 2014, the commission granted the application.

Roxburgh Park Hotel: On 7 October 2014, the commission heard an application from RPH Pty Ltd to increase the number of EGMs at the Roxburgh Park Hotel from 71 to 80. The City of Hume prepared a submission addressing the social and economic impact of the application but did not appear at the hearing. On 11 November 2014, the commission granted the application.
