New on the GIRO web pages

Research Update:

GIRO recently published its first Research Update. The January 2014 edition (pdf) looks at the following four studies published in 2013:

  • Evaluation of the removal of ATMs from gaming venues in Victoria, Australia
  • How the internet is changing gambling: findings from an Australian prevalence survey
  • Cognitive versus exposure therapy for problem gambling: A pilot randomised control trial
  • From adolescent to adult gambling: an analysis of longitudinal gambling patterns in South Australia

Research support:

GIRO recently published a reading list on problem gambling.

New GIRO information sheet:

Sports betting, integrity and courtsiding. In response to the recent arrest for ‘courtsiding’ at the Australian Open, GIRO published an information sheet (pdf). Please note GIRO has added the term ‘courtsiding’ to its glossary.

Community funding opportunities for RGAW 2014

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) will take place between 26 May to 1 June 2014 and will include opportunities to apply for local community funding from the Foundation to support events and activities during RGAW 2014.

Building on the success of the 2013 local community funding program, the foundation is now inviting sporting clubs and community organisations, as well as local governments to apply for grants (pdf) of up to five thousand dollars.

To apply for an RGAW grant or for more information visit or contact
Brett Hetherington by email or phone: (03) 9452 2656.

Tax increase on pokies and changes to return to player rates

In December 2013, Treasurer Michael O’Brien announced a proposal to amend legislation to increase tax on pokie machines by 4.2 per cent and reduce the return to player rate from 87 per cent to 85 per cent. This will be effective from April 2014. Additional information (pdf) is available from the Department of Treasury and Finance. GIRO notes that current actual return to player ratios in venues is likely to be closer to 90 per cent.
