‘No Pokies for Euroa’ tribunal win

Local community organisation, ‘No Pokies for Euroa' has succeeded in overturning Strathbogie Shire Council’s November 2013 approval for 30 additional electronic gaming machines as part of a redevelopment of the Euroa Hotel. The group objected to the council’s decision and filed an appeal in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). On 27 June 2014, the tribunal found the hotel was not a suitable location for pokie machines as it was located in a strip shopping centre.

Greens $1 bet Bill

On 11 June 2014, the state’s Greens introduced the Gambling Regulation and Casino Control Amendment Bill in the Victorian parliament. If passed, this bill will introduce a maximum bet of $1 per spin on all pokie machines in Victoria. Currently,
club and hotel pokie machines are set to a $5 maximum bet while some pokie machines in Crown casino have no limit. The bill provides for industry adjustment through a six year phase-in for dollar bets and, if passed, would apply from 1 January 2020 for large approved venues while smaller venues would have a further 2 year adjustment period.
