New research

Do social casino gamers migrate to online gambling?

Recently published in the Journal of Gambling Studies, this article presents findings on the connection between free-to-play social casino games and online gambling. In particular, the study examined the pathway to online gambling through free social casino games. The study found 26 per cent of non-gambling participants surveyed migrated to online gambling after a six month period. See GIRO’s recent research section for a summary.

Self-reported gambling problems and digital traces

Recently published in Cyberpsychology, Behaviour, and Social Networking, this study examined which consumer transactions were preferred by problem gamblers and were more likely to leave a record of gambling. The authors found a greater risk of developing a gambling problem was associated with a preference for cash transactions, prepaid mobile phones, and internet cafes suggesting problem gamblers sought to reduce their digital tracks. See GIRO’s recent research section for a summary.

Sports-embedded gambling problems

Recently published in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction, this study examined gambling promotions and advertising televised during sporting events to determine whether exposure and attitude to these promotions affected intention to engage in sports betting. See GIRO’s recent research section for a summary.
