The Gambling Information Resource Office is part of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation. GIRO alerts are designed to keep you up to date with the latest information including: new developments in research, policy, regulations and laws at local, state and federal government levels. It also includes decisions from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the courts. GIRO alerts also list upcoming events concerning gambling.

Research update:

GIRO has published its second Research Update. The March 2014 edition looks at the following five studies published in 2013/2014:

  • Gambling Prevalence in South Australia
  • Adolescent simulated gambling via digital and social media: an emerging problem
  • The relationship between gambling, significant life events, co-morbidity and associated social factors
  • Co-morbid problem gambling in substance users seeking treatment
  • The impact of electronic gaming machine jackpots on gambling behaviour

GIRO has added four frequently asked questions to its FAQ web page:

  • How many pokie machines are there in Victoria?
  • Who determines the opening hours for gambling areas in gaming venues?
  • Are gaming venue staff required to look out for people with gambling problems?
  • If gaming venue staff think someone has a gambling problem, or are approached for help, what should they do?

Australian Gambling Statistics:

The Queensland Government recently published the 29th edition of the Australian Gambling Statistics. This new edition includes information and data on legalised gambling in Australia from 1986/1987 to 2011/2012.

Interactive map of Victoria’s liquor licences:

The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation recently published an interactive map of Victoria’s liquor licenses on its website. Details provided on the map include premises names and addresses, liquor license numbers and categories. The filter function allows you to see which venues have dual gambling and liquor licences. In the future, the commission plans to provide additional information specific to gambling licences.

Insight SBS ‘Young Gamblers’:

First aired on 18 March 2014, the show focuses on the personal experiences of a number of young gamblers. Video and transcript are available to view online. Guests include foundation ambassador and Fight for you 100 Day Challenge participant Matt Torcasio and gambling researcher Dr Sally Gainsbury.
