The Gambling Information Resource Office is part of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation. GIRO alerts are designed to keep you up to date with the latest information including: new developments in research, policy, regulations and laws at local, state and federal government levels. It also includes decisions from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the courts. GIRO alerts also list upcoming events concerning gambling.

Research update September 2014

GIRO’s latest research update looks at four studies published in 2014:

  • The Victorian Gambling Study: a longitudinal study of gambling and health in Victoria, 2008-2012
  • Improved outcomes following contact with a gambling helpline: the impact of gender on barriers and facilitators
  • Gaming machine density is correlated with rates of help-seeking for problem gambling: a local area analysis in Victoria, Australia
  • Problem gambling among Ontario students: associations with substance abuse, mental health problems, suicide attempts and delinquent behaviours.

Many ways to help conference 2014: Innovation in the treatment and prevention of problem gambling

In October this year, the foundation will host a conference in Melbourne to support and drive innovation in the treatment and prevention of problem gambling.

The 'Many ways to help' conference is divided into two streams – treatment and prevention – and is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of the dedicated people who work with Victorians affected by gambling.

The conference is by invitation only and will be free of charge. Clinicians and health professionals working with clients experiencing gambling problems in addition to staff from organisations working on foundation-funded local prevention projects are encouraged to attend.

Pre-conference full day master classes are also being offered on Tuesday 21 October to clinicians and health professionals in three areas of treatment: exposure therapy, working with affected others, and feedback informed therapy.

New video: Gambling support services for Victorians

The foundation has produced a new video to help promote the new model for Gambler’s Help services and new in-language gambling support services for Vietnamese, Chinese and Arabic speaking communities.

The video includes interviews with the Minister for Liquor and Gaming Regulation the Hon. Edward O’Donohue, foundation executives and representatives from Gambler’s Help and the new services.

New research

Gambling participation and problem gambling severity in Tasmania:

Recently published in the Journal of Gambling Studies, Gambling participation and problem gambling severity in a stratified random survey: findings from the second social and economic impact study of gambling in Tasmania.

This paper investigates problem gambling in Tasmania using its six prevalence studies and provides new data from the last study in 2011. It notes participation in gambling is falling but problem gambling rates remain stable. See GIRO’s recent research section for a summary.

Presentations from the Gambling Treatment Clinic:

The Gambling Treatment Clinic at the University of Sydney has made available videos of past presentations.

  • Bet you didn’t know that, presented by Ben Paterson discusses the history, mechanics and regulation of slot machines.
  • Using ACT for problem gambling, presented by Louise Shepherd discusses how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can be applied to problem gambling.

Recent VCGLR EGM licensing decision

Pakenham Hotel: On 18 August 2014, the commission heard an application from Castello Pakenham Hotel Pty Ltd to increase the number of EGMs at the Pakenham Hotel from 50 to 70. The Cardinia Shire Council did not make any submissions to the Commission, and on 9 September 2014, the commission granted the application.

Upcoming VCGLR EGM licensing hearing

Bridge Inn Hotel: On 10 October 2014, the commission will hear an application from Benmara Pty Ltd to increase its number of EGMs from 40 to 60 at the Bridge Inn Hotel in the City of Whittlesea.
