Foundation news

Background paper on co-occuring conditions of problem gambling:

The foundation has published a background paper – Co-occurring conditions of problem gambling. The paper provides a summary of evidence about the co-occurring conditions of problem gambling. ‘Co-occurring conditions’ of problem gambling include a range of health conditions such as mental illnesses, substance use disorders, other health conditions, family issues and social problems. The results of this review suggest the most common co-occurring conditions are mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety.

Upcoming presentation on the prevention of problem gambling:

On 2 May 2014, the foundation will host a special presentation by Professor Rob Williams from the University of Lethbridge on the prevention of problem gambling.

'No Pokies for Euroa' VCAT appeal

In November 2013, Strathbogie Shire Council approved a planning application for the redevelopment of the Euroa Hotel, including the addition of 30 electronic gaming machines (EGMs). A local community organisation, ‘No Pokies for Euroa,’ objected to the Council’s decision and filed an appeal in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). At a VCAT mediation on 4 April 2014, parties to the dispute were unable to reach a compromise. A full hearing is scheduled for May 2014.

The Goldsmiths report

A new report from Goldsmiths University of London highlights many important issues in gambling research including the limitations of the concepts ‘responsible gambling’ and ‘problem” gambling’. Fair Game: producing gambling research is based on interviews with 109 stakeholders in the gambling research sector about the production and consumption of gambling research.

Local government gambling news

The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) recently published its March 2014 edition of the Gambling News ebulletin.
