Discussion paper on seeking help for gambling problems:

Research indicates as little as 10 per cent of people with gambling problems seek help. To get a better understanding of help seeking behaviour, the foundation has published a new discussion paper – Seeking help for gambling problems. This paper provides an overview of the research around seeking help and recovery from problem gambling, as well as examining the types of help available and what we know about their effectiveness. The paper also recommends actions for the foundation to support and encourage more people to seek help. One important avenue is offering many forms of help and making them easily available and accessible.

New campaign promotes many ways to get help

The foundation has launched a new problem gambling campaign to promote the many different ways people can get help with their gambling problems. Featuring new branding for Gambler’s Help, the campaign points to a new website, a one stop shop for getting help – www.gamblershelp.com.au. Now airing on television, radio, online and in gaming venues, you can watch it here.

Local government gambling news

Moonee Valley Council has prepared Amendment C140 to their Planning Scheme, which will see the insertion of a gaming policy relating to both planning and the municipality’s strategic statement. The policy takes into account specific characteristics of the local community to guide the location of gaming machines to appropriate areas, sites and venues. The policy will only apply to applications for new electronic gaming machines (EGMs) and does not require existing venues to apply for any further permits or approvals for current EGMs.

Public submissions regarding the amendment are due Friday 6 June 2014. A submission can be sent to the Strategic Planning Department, Moonee Valley City Council, 9 Kellaway Avenue, Moonee Ponds, VIC 3039 or emailed to jspeedy@mvcc.vic.gov.au.
