Utah's Own Reception Highlights Local Food

Once again this year the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food's Utah's Own program hosted a local food reception as part of the annual Governor's Economic Summit in early April.

Utah County Farm Field Day Exposes Hundreds of City Kids to Farm Life


Imagine giving a presentation to 20-30 elementary school children about the area of agriculture you represent. Now imagine telling that story in six minutes and doing it about 20 times in about three hours.

That’s the challenge that faced presenters at the Utah County Farm Bureau Farm Field Day, which was held April 2-4, 2014 at Harward Farms in Springville.

On Friday April 4th, Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) Commissioner LuAnn Adams attended. While there, she was put to work helping with the beef cattle presentation. Students learned how cattle grazing can help public land managers keep range lands healthy and even prevent wildfires. They also learned that the beef they eat is a great source of vitamins, minerals, including zinc and iron, and protein. “Beef gives you ZIP,” was the message.

Adell Young, UDAF egg inspector, was also among the many presenters at the field day. She helped students understand how eggs get from the chicken to the store and the inspection process they go through.

Students also got to see a sheep shearing demonstration, and learn about many other aspects of farming and ranching, from growing vegetables and fruit, to many livestock industries. Live chickens, calves, piglets, horses and other animals were on hand to help give students a real life farm experience.

Several hundred school children from throughout Utah County attend during the three day event, which is sponsored annual by the Utah and Utah County Farm Bureau offices.

UDAF Participates in Local Earth Day Education Event


Utah Department of Agriculture and Food apiary inspectors became teachers at the Salt Lake Valley Health Department's 5th Annual Earthday Festival on April 22, 2014. Joey Caputo and Kris Watson taught 500 elementary school students about the important role bees play in our environment and food supply. The live demonstration beehive was a big hit.


Utah's Own Holds First Regional Economic Summit



The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food's Utah's Own program just completed its first regional economic summit. The purpose of the summit, held in Brigham City, was to offer owners of fledgling local food-oriented companies the opportunity to network with more experienced and successful businesses, and State of Utah economic development providers. UDAF Conducts Bee Inspections to Prevent Spread of American Foul Brood


The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) is conducting a three year apiary (bee and hive) health survey in five counties: Washington, Utah, Salt Lake, Davis and Box Elder. The main goal of the survey is to find out the baseline health of these apiaries.

Managed bees are critical to Utah’s tree fruit industry, which is worth an estimated $36,000,000 annually. Inspectors are specifically looking for incidents of American Foul Brood (AFB). It was found in five counties in Utah last year. “We are interested in where this disease is and who might have it, because it is a highly contagious disease,” said Joey Caputo, apiary inspector, UDAF. Of all the brood diseases managed colonies can become afflicted with, American Foul Brood is the most devastating, Caputo said.

Most of our beekeepers in the state are in urban areas and very close to each other. That makes the possibility of AFB becoming pandemic more likely than if the beekeepers in the state were more spread out.

State of the Art Tomato Greenhouse Coming to Juab County


Some of the lowest carbon footprint tomatoes in the country will soon be grown in Utah, thanks to Houweling's tomatoes and Rocky Mountain Power. Today was the groundbreaking ceremony for a state of the art tomato growing facility in Mona, Utah. The 28.3 acre greenhouse will employ about 120 people and significantly increase the supply of local tomatoes in Utah year round.



In a deal with Rocky Mountain Power, Houweling's greenhouse will use waste energy and Co2 from the power plant next door. Houwelings will also trade the power company water rights, so cleaner well water can be piped from across the valley to the new facility.

Construction officially started with the groundbreaking ceremony on April 24, 2014. The first facility is set to be operations by the end of October. They already have large hydroponic operations in British Columbia, Canada, and Southern California. The Utah facility will open up the Intermountain West region for distribution. A large portion of the product produced in Mona will stay in the State of Utah. The farthest the tomatoes will travel is 500 miles.

Yearlong Data Show Gold Buyer Scales Don't Measure Up


Results of 286 inspections of gold scales in Utah in 2013 revealed that 177, or 62 percent of the scales were out of compliance. The other 38 percent, 109 scales, passed inspection. Most of the scales provided an inaccurate weight that shorted the consumer by an average of .60 grams per transaction. Read the full story.
