Turn on Your Full Receptors
Enjoy last week’s complimentary live broadcast.  We are sharing it publicly due to a special request.  It was a subject that hit home for many people struggling to stay on a health promoting plant-based diet and produce sustainable results.  The lesson focused on food satisfaction, fear of healthy foods, food anxiety, and binge eating.  Many people are struggling to understand what full feels like.  I can relate as I was a former binger that rolled my severe overeating habits from a standard diet, to a junky vegan diet, to a Protective Diet.  Once I eliminated physically addictive foods and additives designed to make me over-consume, my food cravings ceased.  I no longer felt the shakes of withdrawal symptoms driving me to eat.  My continual search for food ended and food was no longer occupying my every thought. 

I was finally past the physical addiction to food, but I wasn't past the physical need to eat past full. I knew food ingredients didn't have a hold on me anymore.  Yet I was still hooked on the feeling overeating provided.  It wasn't too surprising that I became accustomed to this overly full feeling.  I had been binge eating every night for years.  It was a feeling I unknowingly looked forward to every evening.   This was my way to soothe, numb and escape the pain in my life.  I explain my experience in greater detail in the video, but I want to share that I am free of this binge eating burden. After eliminating the physical addiction drawing me to food, I could address the emotional triggers to overeating.  Then, with practice, I became accustomed to feeling full instead of stuffed.
At first it was uncomfortable.  A slight panic overwhelmed me when the feeling of full was not yet registering.  I felt stressed when I stopped eating before my plate was empty.  I had to talk myself calm and realize I wouldn't starve eating normal serving sizes. I practiced some new habits to allow satiation to register.  After about a week of focused practice, I realized my energy had improved post meals and I felt like being active after dinner instead of passing out in a food coma on the couch. I dropped excess body fat and was saving time and money stretching meals from one large serving into two.  Before I knew it, I was of those people who left two bites of food on their plate and walked away from a meal satisfied and energetic.  Every now and then I fall back into old habits of eating unconsciously while working, eating during movie nights, or eating while reading.  These practices stretch out our stomachs quickly.  Eating quickly with distractions causes our full receptors to numb out and not register until we are stuffed full.  Over time this begins to feel normal again and we have to reset our full receptors to more reasonable portions.  The good thing is that it only takes about a week or 20 meals of consciously eating a Protective Diet.

Irene Rubaum-Keller, licensed psychotherapist, published an article that gained the attention of our community this week.  It lined right up with my practice featured in last week's PD-Ed lesson.  It discussed Hara Hachi Bu, the Japanese practice of eating until you are 80% full.  This article lit the fire in me to get you all going with this life-changing results-driven practice of enjoyable eating.  Let's develop a healthy relationship with food.  Learn to enjoy the celebration of our food’s full flavors with the ability to stop at full.   This practice will quickly turn into your personal normal on a Protective Diet.

I was 60-70% PD from November - May 10. I definitely felt some benefits - feeling better and SLOWLY losing a few pounds. May 11 was my 100% PD first day. Today I am down 20 (yes, TWENTY) pounds in 2 months.

I feel so much better. I am more active than I have been in quite a while. I started Karate 2-3x per week, I started yoga, I stand much more at my stand up desk, I prepare all my own (and most of my family's) food - all this while still taking care of my family of four, one extended family member and running my own business. I definitely have more energy. And, I know I definitely WON'T need a seat belt extender on a plane! And, on top of all that, the food is delicious! I often share mine with my office staff and they LOVE everything I have shared!
