Exhausted, Moody and Vegan
 
I am meeting more and more people who have given a vegan diet a try. Unfortunately, the most common response I receive from a new acquaintance that finds out about my dietary practice is, "I tried that, but I need extra protein in my diet for energy.  I was so tired after a week that I had to I add lean meats, fish and dairy back into my diet."

Instead of disagreeing, shutting down and becoming upset that they didn't give it a solid try, I explain why they were feeling fatigue, possibly moody, uncomfortable, gassy and bloated.  This is only the transitional period and it’s due to detox.  When adopting a clean, whole food plant-based diet, many people experience uncomfortable detoxification symptoms such as cravings, fatigue or headaches.  Many will view this as their body signaling this plan isn't good for them.  I look at this as an awesome awareness of their body’s natural signals, but it couldn't be farther from the truth.  

The cravings and fatigue are triggered by withdrawal from food ingredients that your body is physically addicted to.  These food ingredients are found in animal products and chemicals in packaged processed foods.  The more of these foods we included in our previous diet, the more severe the symptoms can be.  

For example did you ever do a juice cleanse?  During this time of clean sipping, your body is withdrawing from toxic ingredients you had been eating before starting the cleanse.  During the first few days, your body is tired.  It is busy cleaning house and promoting fresh new healthy cell turnover. 

The great news is we can do the exact same thing with the practice of a Protective Diet.  The difference is we can eat solid health-promoting foods to satisfy our cravings during detox.  The best part is that it isn't a temporary fix or just a reboot, sending you back to your old ways when juice isn't satisfying your need for hunger satisfaction.  After we power through Protective Diet's Whole Food Detox and Taste Bud Reprogram, high energy and evenness of mood emerge.  Our body continues to heal and repair on the path to optimal health.  Cravings for off-plan foods vanish and our taste buds begin to detect fats and sugars in low-fat, natural plant-based foods, creating greater food satisfaction.   We can then easily continue this deliciously satisfying practice long term, resulting in permanent life-changing health improvements and weight loss.
