Message from the CEO – Geraldine Dean

Geraldine Dean

Hello and welcome to our first E Newsletter for Spring. Thank you for taking the time to read about all of the exciting things happening at Youth Solutions.

Youth Solutions has been a hive of activity during the past two months as we forge ahead with our project work. Our four Program Officers have been out and about in our schools each week, building our young peoples’ resilience, alcohol and other drug knowledge, through our DARE project.

Last month Youth Solutions was announced as the proud recipient of the highly commended Youth Service of the Year Award at the Youth Action 2014 Youth Work Awards. Our team is thrilled to receive this fantastic accolade which is a testament to the hard work we do and the great support we have from the community.

During the past two months Youth Solutions has also partnered with other community services and organisations to deliver a range of activities in the community. In August we partnered with a number of organisations to deliver the region’s first International Overdose Awareness Day event. We also expect to see great results from the upcoming Be YOUnique Wellbeing Workshop which will be held this month as a result of another great partnership. Please read on for more details about these two events.

Work is now well underway for our upcoming Safer Celebrations project, which will be launched at the Youth Solutions AGM on Thursday 20 November. The campaign is targeted at young people aged 18 - 25 and will aim to promote safer partying practices in the community during the upcoming celebration season. We can’t wait for you to see what we have planned this year. Special thanks to the Campbelltown Catholic Club who have partnered with us to deliver this great community project once again.

I encourage you read on for more details about what has been happening at Youth Solutions and the great things we have planned over the next few months.

Youth Solutions presents at ZEST conference

Youth Solutions Program Officers Lauren Ognenovski and Amanda Partridge at the ZEST Conference.

After winning the ZEST Award for Exceptional Community Partnership in a Local Government Area earlier this year, Youth Solutions was asked to present at the ZEST Awards best practice conference - From Stories to Solutions.

The conference was held in Parramatta last month and two of the Youth Solutions Program Officers presented tips and information to other community service organisations. The presentation dealt with the topic of Changing Community Attitudes to Societal Norms in line with the success of Youth Solutions’ 2013 – 2014 Safer Celebrations campaign What’s the cost to you?

Youth Solutions was thrilled to be part of this fantastic opportunity which included the chance to hear from a number of inspiring community sector services.

Tackling the issue: amphetamines

Last month Youth Solutions hosted its first AOD Link training presentation for the 2014 - 2015 year, with a focus on amphetamines.

AOD Link is a professional network auspiced by Youth Solutions. It works to identify issues relating to alcohol and other drugs (AOD), develop and implement strategies to address these issues and share information on currently accepted best practice in the AOD sector.

At last month's presentation, participants were presented with information about amphetamines, types of amphetamines, routes of administration, recent trends and health effects. Youth Solutions also provided participants with handouts relating to common withdrawal symptoms, harm reduction strategies and treatment services.

The next AOD Link presentation will be on 11 December 2014. Stay tuned for more details.
