E News November 2014

Message from the CEO – Geraldine Dean

Geraldine Dean

Hello and welcome to our November E Newsletter.

November is a busy time for Youth Solutions as we launch our next Safer Celebrations campaign in partnership with Campbelltown Catholic Club. Many of our association members and supporters will attend our annual general meeting tonight, which will coincide with the campaign launch. Please read on for more details.

This month the team has also continued to reach young people in our community and in our schools through a variety of workshops including DARE, Party SAFE and PEEP. The common theme running through the workshops centres around educating young people about alcohol and other drugs and helping them to make safer, smarter choices.

As we head towards the end of the year we are now looking ahead to 2015 and taking workshop bookings. If you are interested in finding out more about our projects and workshops or having them delivered at your school please check out our website and get in touch!

Read on to find out what Youth Solutions has been up to and the great things we have planned in the coming month. And remember, celebrate safely this spring and summer!

Youth get an ARTucation

Young people enjoyed the chance to create murals with Aboriginal artist Danielle Mate-Sullivan.

Narellan Library was a sea of colour recently as young people created murals and learnt about alcohol and other drugs at Youth Solutions' ARTucation workshop.

Supported by Camden Council, the workshop on 14 October 2014  engaged 17 young people. The young people took turns in creating vibrant murals under the guidance of renowned local Aboriginal artist Danielle Mate-Sullivan and engaged with mini health promotion activities aimed at educating them about  drugs and alcohol. The group also bonded over a pizza lunch.

The ARTucation workshops are part of Youth Solutions' YARN (Young Aboriginal Reference Network) project. The project aims to reduce binge drinking and alcohol-related harms through workshops and creative arts. For more information about ARTucation or YARN or to book a workshop for your school visit the Youth Solutions website or call Lauren on 4628 2319.

Community event celebrates uniqueness

The Be YOUnique Wellbeing Workshop was supported by a host of great volunteers.

Young people shared pizza, positive affirmations and wellbeing tips at a recent Mental Health Month workshop.

Youth Solutions, headspace Campbelltown and University of Western Sydney linked up to host the Be YOUnique Wellbeing Workshop at the university's Campbelltown campus on 7 October 2014.

The event included presentations from headspace Clinical Psychologist Dr Rebecca Bargenquast and Youth Reference Group member Pierre Goorkiz, as well as Youth Solutions Program Officer Karen Yuen and Youth Advisory Group member Lana Nguyen.

Participants were also given the chance to take part art activities, which included leaving positive affirmations for others in the envelope exchange art installation and sharing their unique characteristics on the communal chalkboard.

Following the success of the event students from the university's The Academy recruited Youth Solutions to host a stall at its Mental Health Month event Project OSM (Of Sound Mind) on 21 October 2014.

Knowledge shines at inaugural Trivia Night

More than 65 people popped on their thinking caps and dug deep at Youth Solutions inaugural Trivia Night on 24 October 2014.

Held at Narellan Community Hall, the Trivia Night saw competitors go head-to-head in five gruelling rounds. The guests also had the chance to take part in scavenger hunts and games.

The event raised $1800 which will assist Youth Solutions to continue its work in promoting health and preventing harm to young people in our community.

Youth Solutions would like to thank the event sponsor J & L Borgo Pty Ltd whose support made the Trivia Night possible. Thanks also to those who donated prizes for the event.

Youth Solutions gets festive for Light Up Camden

Youth Advisory Group members Emily and Bryce run the Youth Solutions stall at Light Up Camden.

Santa Claus came to town this month and Youth Solutions was there for all the fun!

The annual Light Up Camden Festival 2014 brought the Camden CBD to life on Saturday 15 November, with fireworks, stalls and a visit from Santa.

The Youth Solutions team was also on hand with a stall, offering a pre-launch sneak peak at this year's Safer Celebrations campaign. The team gave away plenty of freebies and collected surveys from more than 50 people who attended the festival.

Special thanks to our event volunteers who helped out on the night.
