Happy New Year! I hope the start of your year was a good one. I am very excited about 2014 because I’m  expecting great and wonderful things to happen and I hope you are, too. I’m sure you’ve made your list of resolutions: change careers, read more, get a new job, spend more time with family, grow the business, be more organized, travel, and of course let’s not forget  the standard one, lose weight.  

These are all great resolutions and I’m sure you have high hopes for yourself, but I have a feeling that, like most people, you’ve already relapsed on some.  What if you had someone who could help you achieve those resolutions? Someone who could help you to be more accountable, more intentional in achieving your goals, someone committed to the success of you?  What you need is a coach.

What do coaches do and why work with one?
Coaches help you shape a professional or personal goal, and support you in reaching it. A good coach helps you build skills and understanding to meet your goals. Coaches are not therapists examining the past (although this may be useful in small amounts). They are guides helping you into a successful future. Whether your goals are personal or professional, coaching can be an excellent tool for you.

How do you decide whether a coach is what you need?
Take a look at your life. What are the two or three things that you really want to accomplish, whether personal or professional? What obstacles are blocking your ability to accomplish these goals? Are you unclear about how to proceed? Are you having trouble getting motivated? Is there some resource you need that you aren’t sure how to obtain?

I worked with a promising retail executive who struggled to communicate in a professional manner with her team. She was a great individual contributor and upper level management saw great leadership potential in her, but she was unaware of how she came across to her colleagues and junior staff.
