The Centre explores the themes of the natural history of Bass Strait and its islands, European exploration, settlement, early shipbuilders and entrepreneurs, shipwrecks and the history of Devonport.
‘Take the Helm’ is a simulated experience of bringing a steamer into the Mersey River or through the heads of Port Phillip Bay. The newly restored Julie Burgess ketch though, provides the real experience with two-hour sailings Wednesday and Sunday, taking passengers out into Bass Strait and back.

Siding Spring Observatory

Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) is located in the Warrumbungle region of New South Wales, at a height of 1164m.
SSO began as a field station for the Mount Stromlo Observatory when light pollution from Canberra began to adversely affect sky visibility from MSO.
It has since become Australia's premier facility for optical and infrared astrophysics observations.  

ANU also operates accommodation facilities for observing astronomers and the Exploratory visitor's centre at SSO.

The sensation of the late 18th century in the field of botany was the discovery of a new continent filled with exotic plants unknown to the rest of the world. The Australian Botanic Garden displays around 2000 of these, set in 416 hectares of hills and lakes.
The crowning glory of this stunning garden, is the Australian PlantBank, a new science facility specialising in the research and conservation of Australian plants. Groups can take part in a tour of the facility guided by one of the scientists or take part in one of the other two tours including a general garden tour or a look at what takes place behind the scenes of a commercial nursery.
