Andy Warhol was known as a "prolific doodler" and constantly experimented in his work, this freedom is evident in his many books. Andy Warhol's book-work provides a surprising look into the artist's creativity, his ideas about art and questions the common notion of what a book can be. The Warhol By the Book exhibit opens this Saturday, October 10 and runs through the first week of January 2016. The exhibition offers a full picture of Warhol's development from his early student-work illustrations in the 1950s to his achievemnt of Pop Culture icon status in the 1980s. You can see Warhol By the Book on the Second Floor of the Andy Warhol Museum located at 117 Sandusky Street; the exhibit is included with Museum Admission

Out and About: The Diary of Anne Frank
By Jillian Schaefer, PDP Marketing & Special Events Associate

The first time I read The Diary of Anne Frank I was in sixth grade. The summer after ninth grade, my father and I visited the Anne Frank house and museum in Amsterdam. In between then and now, I have seen the play at least twice and read numerous other publications about Anne and the Frank family. Despite my familiarity with the subject, the gravity of Anne’s story remains ever haunting.

Remy Zaken, who stars as Anne Frank, is most well known for originating the role of Thea on Broadway in Spring Awakening. The play begins with Otto Frank, Anne’s father, returning to the hidden annex to discover the clear, vivacious voice of his daughter he thought he’d lost forever in the form of her diary. It is Zaken’s narration that leads us through Anne’s every reflection during the family’s two year period of hiding. While the mood of the play is somber, Zaken and the rest of the Pittsburgh Public Theater ensemble do a wonderful job of capturing those rare moments of jubilation, wit and normalcy among the Frank family and their guests. It is clear a tremendous amount of time went into assuring each scene runs seamlessly through Anne’s perpetual dialogue.

Although we all know how this story ends, Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production admirably reminds us of our vulnerability in this world and to appreciate the courage and strength of the human spirit.

The Diary of Anne Frank will run until Sunday, October 25 at the O’Reilly Theater located at 621 Penn Avenue. For more information about the show and to purchase tickets, click here.

Coneman Tip of the Week: Penn Avenue Bike Lane Update

Many of you have probably been wondering when the final block of the Penn Avenue Bike Lane between Sixth and Stanwix Streets will be completed. Last year when most of the bike lane was put in, PWSA discovered that one of the pipes running under that block needed to be repaired before the street could be milled and repaved. That work was done earlier this year.

Recently, DPW milled the section from Sixth to Stanwix Streets and discovered trolley tracks near the surface.  Unfortunately, the trolley tracks are so close to the road surface that, if they are paved over, the asphalt will easily erode from the wear and tear of car traffic. The solution? The trolley tracks have to be dug up and removed before the road can be paved and striped for the bike lane. When will the job be done? Hopefully, before winter.
