Our third event in the CELLO CELLO season next Thursday features the wonderful Matthew Barley, a powerful creative player who, along with playing concertos with major orchestras, has worked with musicians across borders including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Julian Joseph, Django Bates and Nikki Yeoh. It's been my delight to work with him on many occasions from jamming with traditional Japanese musicians in a London Sinfonietta project in Tokyo, to writing an extended piece for him ‘cello and tape, ‘The Seventh Wave’ - one movement from that will be played tonight.
Matthew will also play music by Sollima, Bach and a cadenza from HK Gruber's Cello Concerto that he will soon perform with the BBC Philharmonic. There will also be new ‘one-page scores’ by Alex Roth and Chris Corcoran, who are ‘embedded’ with us for a year in a splendid Sound of Music programme, working with our project on every level from writing the Institute of Composing Journal to directing an extended performance in the autumn in the London Jazz Festival.
So please come down and see us next week. As ever - we (Notes Inégales) play - then Matthew - then together. Some things are predictable some not. Last week we talked with colleagues about the ‘10:30 moment’ when you really don’t know what’s going to happen - we are always heading towards that the moment - the seventh wave indeed.
We have lovely food by Ayam Happy from 7pm and don’t forget to watch our CELLO CELLO films - here’s a new one on pizzicato. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbEgY2FP-D0
