Northern Adelaide Plains Seed Information Day
An information day and BBQ, co-hosted by the Association and Elders, was held in Virginia on Friday 16 May. Nigel Crump, GM ViCSPA (independent seed certification authority) and Rene De Jong, National Manager Potatoes, Elders, provided information on the importance of using certified seed and its optimal storage conditions (air circulation, fresh air and temperature management).
Lack of communication along the value chain and the understanding of physiological age were two major discussion points. More, informal sessions to better understand the real issues concerning the industry are planned.

Mallee and Lower Limestone Coast Water Allocation Plans
The Association is continuing to provide support to irrigators in these two regions which produce more than 80% of South Australia’s potatoes. Independently facilitated meetings were conducted with the stakeholders, the independent reviewer (Australian Groundwater Technologies Pty Ltd) and Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) and Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA) executives and policy makers in mid-May.
On behalf of the stakeholders, the Association has liaised with the relevant State Ministers and Members of Parliament concerning the drastic reductions and inequitable allocations which will result in decreased production. A moratorium in the Mallee Prescribed Wells Area (PWA) has been requested particularly as reductions take effect from 1 July 2014.
The Association and stakeholders are waiting to receive responses from Government and Minister Hunter to concerns in the Issues Papers and questions which arose from the facilitated meetings.
Strategic Planning Workshop
Tristan Kitchener, Kitchener Partners, facilitated a full day workshop on 17 June to identify, agree and prioritise key opportunities and actions for enabling future growth of the potato industry. Key industry stakeholders and the Board Directors participated at this structured ‘round table’ workshop which has resulted in an Output Report. This will form the backbone of the Association’s three-year Strategic Plan.
The flexible plan will be owned and endorsed by industry and will guide the Association in fulfilling its objectives to provide the best, most relevant and cost-efficient services to all stakeholders.
The Recommendations and Full Report by Acil Allen Consultants were delivered on 9 May and were accepted by the HAL Board. Read More...
