Mentor a Paper Programme

For this year’s congress we have introduced a new programme – Mentor a Paper. Authors of abstracts that were selected for presentations have been asked if they would like to work on their papers together with more experienced Mentors. Then a group of ISOCARP Members volunteered to work together with Mentees. Now they are expected to finalise their work . We hope that this cooperation will bring mutual benefits to both, and also contribute to achieve better quality of papers presented at the Congress.
We are also planning to launch Mentoring Sessions during the congress, more information will be coming soon.

New members

Since last November, the organisation grew by 40 new individual members and 2 new institutional ones. They individual members are coming from 27 different countries from 5 continents: Africa (3), Asia (8), Australia and Oceania (2), Europe (12) and North America (2). The new Institutional Members are the Prague Institute for Planning and Development and the Town and Country Planning Association of Kenya (TCPAK). We welcome all new members. To see who they are, one may enter the dedicated welcome page on ISOCARP’s website here. Among the new individual members, it may be emphasized the large number of young professionals (YPPs) – more that 50% - who joined the organisation and were strongly supported and recommended by older ISOCARP members. During the last 5 months around 40 applications were evaluated by the Selection Committee, out of which 24 were recommended for endorsement and 10 others are on hold for getting additional information or clarifications. However, not all the endorsed applicants went through all the necessary administrative steps to become members. During the same interval, more than 60 other applications were evaluated by the National Delegations. Although there seems to be a growing interest for professionals from all over the world to become member of ISOCARP, it has to be mentioned that the rate of endorsement is around 50% of the total applications due to the fact that many applications are not complete or the applicants do not fulfil the required criteria.

Speeding the evaluation process

On this occasion, we take the opportunity to remind our Bureau Members (BMs) and all members of the National Delegations (NDs) the current procedure for evaluation and approval of new members. According to an ExCo decision from 2013, the process of endorsement follows three main steps once the application is received by the Head Office (HO): firstly, the membership application is sent from the ISOCARP HO to the respective BM for feedback – after consultation of the ND members - within two weeks; if the Bureau Member recommends the candidate in due time, the application is processed by the HO and both the candidate and the VP for Members and ND (M&ND) are informed and no further steps are necessary (except the administrative ones); if no feedback is received from the BM in due time, the application is forwarded to the VP for M&ND to make a final decision within a week, after taking into consideration the selection committee’s comments when necessary. In this case the evaluation can take more time as in some cases the ExCo members – the selection committee or the VP for M&ND must consult with the BM or some other member of the NDs. It is most desirable that the BMs and the ND members to consider and respond as quickly as possible to the applications for membership send by the HO, in order to speed the process. The BM and the members of the NDs are more familiar with the professional environment of the applicant and so their judgement is the most appropriate.

National Delegations yearly reports

By beginning of New Year 2016 the HO received 24 reports about the activities of the NDs during the former year. Reports came from: Algeria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Namibia, Netherlands, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Thailand and Turkey. A few other reports are still expected from India, Mexico and Nigeria whereas 18 ND reported no activities for 2015. Among the NDs with significant activities and comprehensive reports can be mentioned: Australia, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Netherlands, Serbia, and Turkey. Interesting suggestions and proposals came also from Algerian, Iranian and Portuguese NDs. We would like to thank them all and ensure them that a review of all relevant activities and ideas will be published soon.

Strategic Partnership Agreement ISOCARP - Global Cities Business Alliance: Survey participation

Urban housing is a challenge faced by city governments in most global business capitals as a result of large-scale population growth. However, it has also become a challenge for business, with city-based organisations increasingly experiencing difficulties recruiting and retaining talent. This in particular affects the mid-tier, globally mobile workers (in both public and private sectors), who are being squeezed out of the city housing market. Ultimately this adversely affects businesses and a city’s competitiveness. The Global Cities Business Alliance’s Housing for Inclusive Cities survey seeks to gather perspectives about this issue from a cross-section of employees in major cities around the world.
