Division/Clinton Street Fair
By Bonita Davis, RA Board Member at Large and Uber-Master Recycler

Come on down and have some fun in one of Portland’s vibrant neighborhoods this Saturday, July 21st. The annual Division/Clinton Street Fair will be in full swing from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Activities are centered near 26th where it intersects with both Clinton and Division, plus in the business community along the neighboring streets. Look for Recycling Advocates at our Bring Your Own Cup booth under the green canopy at 27th and Clinton. Of course we will be in the parade that starts at 11:00 a.m.

The fun starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 5:00 p.m. Lots to eat, drink, learn and do. Join us!

What I'm Reading: The Parents' Guide to Climate Revolution
Review by Bonita Davis, RA Board Member and BYOC Campaign Coordinator

Mary DeMocker, author of The Parents’ Guide to Climate Revolution (2018, New World Library,) begins her book with a seemingly radical notion to cease doing some of the common things done by those trying to live a “green lifestyle.” Actions such as faithful recycling, home energy conservation around sun-drying the laundry, biking to work, bring our own shopping bag… all the things most of us do faithfully. Point being? These things alone are not going to stop climate change.

DeMocher advocates stopping stupid and starting smart. To DeMocher, stupid is burning fossil fuels, deforestation, the release of methane and refrigerants, and carbon unleashing methods of farming and ranching. Smart is ending the “carbon kegger” we seem to be on and instead, placing our efforts into expanding solar, wind, and wave power, conservation, tree planting, carbon farming, methane capture and more. This type of climate revolution requires both political and cultural shifts, and technological changes. She looks to the planet her children will inherit and how she prepares them to plan and act.
Help Keep Rooster Alive!

We're sad to hear that our friends at Rooster are having trouble keeping the business running. Their "Pay it Forward" mission has helped so many of us since they brought the Rooster online community to Portland, letting us connect with neighbors to borrow, lend, give and receive goods and services.

They gave us generous support as we began our BYOC campaign a couple of years back, by providing our wonderful RA/Rooster travel mugs, and they have helped any number of other nonprofits over the years.

Now they need our help to keep the Rooster community going. Read their message here, and please consider making a contribution to help out a company that has helped so many of us.
Travels in Greenland: Impacts of Global Warming
By Susan Mead, RA Secretary

My husband and I had the opportunity to travel to Greenland in June of this year.  We contacted a local native Inuit guide, Adam Lyberth, to take us on a tour of Greenland’s ice sheet near the town of Kangerlussuaq in West Greenland.  Based on his client list, which has included Hillary Clinton, Warren Buffet and Leonardo DiCaprio, we figured we would get an up close and personal look at how global warming is impacting his country.

Greenland is the largest island in the world, roughly one-fifth the size of the United States. Its ice sheet is one of only two in the world (the other one being Antarctica) and covers roughly 80% of the island.  If the entire ice sheet melted sea levels around the world would rise by 20 feet.
BYOC in Motion

Richard was spotted with the new Peet's reuseable coffee cup. He shared that he bought two as soon as they came out. One goes in his bike bag or to carry on walks and the other in his car. Conservation is his motivation to BYOC!
Signs of Progress

Here are a few "positive signs" spotted around town. All photos are from Bonita Davis.
Clockwise, from top left:
  • At the coffee bar at Market of Choice in the Goat Blocks on Belmont.
  • Peet's Coffee adds reusable travel cups, lids and totes to their menu.
  • Whole Foods on NE Sandy urges those selecting produce to go with paper or a reusable bag.
  • At Pepino's Mexican Grill on SE Hawthorne and 38th.
