Plastic Film Recycling is back at Far West Fibers!

by Katie Allen, Recycling Advocates, Board Member at Large

Many of us who visit Far West Fibers depots on a regular basis have been anxiously anticipating the return of plastic film recycling.  Due to industry factors plastic film was not accepted at FWF for quite some time, but Recycling Advocates is happy to report it is back!

Plastic film makes up a lot of the packaging we accumulate from the grocery store, online purchases and moving materials. The easiest way to determine if the product can be considered film is if one’s finger can easily poke a hole through the plastic. If it stretches like a grocery bag, it is plastic film and can be recycled. If it crinkles like a potato chip bag, it is not film and belongs in the trash. There are many plastic film products besides grocery bags which can be recycled. Don’t forget to include the stretchable bread bag, shrink wrap around paper towels or bathroom tissue, dry cleaning bags, air pillows used for shipping, bubble wrap used during moving, and clean dry garbage bags on your next trip to Far West Fibers.

One of the best parts of recycling is discovering that these old products can now be made into something new. The second life of plastic film is very exciting. Some of the products born out of film recycling include clothing, bags, durable building and construction products such as fencing and decking, door and window frames, and exterior moldings. The list just goes on and on as the industry develops.

As always, we can still deposit our plastic bag collection at any local grocery story, but now we can also bring it with our other non-curbside recyclables to a FWF neighborhood site; the one-stop services that FWF provides will make recycling that much easier for those just joining the fold.

Far West Fibers has locations in SE Portland, NE Portland, N Portland, Hillsboro and Lake Oswego. Please visit their website for location details and times - and please spread the word about this recent development!
