What will our garbage and recycling system look like in 2030?
By Brion Hurley, RA President

Metro LogoOn December 7th, RA President Brion Hurley participated in the 2030 Regional Waste Plan, hosted by Metro. Metro is currently drafting the vision and goals for the garbage and recycling system in the year 2030, and is trying to get as many participants as possible. Attendees included other nonprofits, government agencies, waste management companies, city/county representatives, and some business representatives.

According to the Metro website, the 2030 plan will include:

  • A vision for reducing the overall impacts of goods consumed in the region – not just the disposal of those goods but also the production of them
  • Policies to help ensure equity in the system, including access to services
  • Goals for achieving what residents want from the system by 2030
  • A plan that identifies actions to accomplish those goals, and ways to measure progress.

We met at the Oregon Convention Center for 2 hours, to provide our input on 9 areas of work:

Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle!  Here are two Fix-it Fair dates for your 2018 calendars:

January 27th at George Middle School in N Portland.
February 24th at Madison High School in NE Portland.

Fix-It FairBoth fairs run 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. They will feature "Repair Cafes", and also exhibits and workshops on topics such as:

Experiential Gifts - No Gift Wrap Required!

We asked RA board members about their favorite "experiential gifts" - ways of giving friends and family things to DO rather than things to HAVE.

Betty says "Portland is full of live music and dance opportunities of all genres. My favorite gifts to receive are tickets to go see live music with my husband and friends (classical or jazz) or tickets to a White Bird dance show or Oregon Ballet Theatre performance.

Bonita's favorite was a gift certificate for a retreat at Breitenbush Hot Springs. She tells us she signed up for a silent retreat in the last few days before the certificate expired - and it was pure magic!

Susan would happily give or receive an Oregon State Parks annual parking permit. She notes it's even on sale during December, available for only $25. See the Oregon Parks Department website here.

Denise says she likes to give: ...And the ideas kept coming:
  • Admission to Portland's Chinese or Japanese gardens.
  • Massage or Mani-pedi gift certificate.
  • Share your skills and/or time: offer an evening of babysitting, an afternoon of gardening, a cooking or music lesson...
  • Tickets to see a favorite sports team play.
  • Contribution to a favorite cause in the recipient's name. Perhaps the Sierra Club, Humane Society... or of course Recycling Advocates!
  • For the traveler: AAA membership, or share your frequent flier miles.
  • For the foodie, a gift certificate for a favorite restaurant, or a cooking class.
Many of these can be purchased online, so they make great last minute gifts.

Our brilliant board member Bonita was featured on KATU's Afternoon Live recently, giving great tips on reducing holidays waste. See her interview here.
Way to go, Bonita!

Do Just One Thing: Say No to STUFF this Christmas!

Make it clear to friends and family that this holiday season you don't need more stuff - and that you won't be giving it either. Then check the long list of "experiential gifts" earlier in the newsletter for ideas for gifts that will fill people's hearts with joy and their minds with memories to treasure - instead of filling their homes with stuff
