Campaign Update
By Brion Hurley, Recycling Advocates President

BYOCAt our last board meeting we discussed a system for rating coffee shops based on how many incentives they have in place. The more they do to reduce their use of disposable cups, the higher their rating. The idea is to rate the shops to provide motivation for them to improve based on peer and social pressure.

We are finalizing the criteria right now, and will soon be looking for volunteers to help visit and rate coffee shops. If you are interested and haven't reached out to us yet, please reply to this email to express interest.

A Post-Election Message from RA President Brion Hurley

Brion HurleyAfter the Election: Turning a Negative into a Positive.

The presidential election was a shock to many of us.

After some reflection over the past few days, I have a new outlook. As the new President of Recycling Advocates, I’d like to share that perspective with you as we start looking ahead to 2017 under a new political landscape.

1) We have momentum on our side

The pursuit of zero waste is ingrained in the culture of the Portland metro region. No decisions at the national level are going to stop the momentum we have, unless we allow it...   [ Read More ]

Caffé D’Arte: a Place to Linger
By Recycling Advocates Volunteer Bonita Davis

Upon entering the coffee shop Caffé D’Arte, something seemed pleasantly different. Tall windows and arches, warm ochre colors, ceramic floor tiles, wooden furniture and a greeting by the barista all invited me to sit and stay. After settled, I noticed that  nearly all of the patrons were drinking from ceramic cups. Caffe D'Arte MugWhen ordering a coffee at Caffé D’Arte, the default is “for here.” Your reward is a handsome black classic ceramic coffee cup with a complimentary chocolate on the saucer. The manager, Stephanie, guestimates that over 40% of the customer base orders their coffee “for here.” Drink your coffee in the shop and one free refill is included. Baristas Cara and Josh shared that it is a source of pride to serve artisan coffees in cups that enhance the visual experience.

Bring in your own cup and the discount is 25¢, with a free refill. Travel water bottles and mugs are for sale on the counter and near the door. A water station with pitchers of ice water and durable cups, bulk creamer, and a bussing tub further cut down on one-time use containers and packaging.

The Seattle-based Italian coffee shop is located at 1615 NE 15th Ave. in Portland’s Lloyd District. The popular outdoor deck compliments the equally popular indoor seating area. More information at www.caffedarte.com.
