Annual Meeting Invitation

Here's a reminder to RSVP for Recycling Advocates' Annual Meeting on September 1st, if you haven't already. Just some of the reasons you should join us:
  • Meet Representative Rob Nosse, hear about banning Styrofoam in Oregon's public schools and other environmental initiatives from the last legislative session. 
  • Hear from Sunnyside Environmental School teacher Michelle Strobel and her students about how they worked with Rep. Nosse to pass the school Styrofoam ban.
  • Enjoy food and drinks from Laughing Planet, Sweetpea Baking Co., Lucky Lab and others.
  • Share waste prevention ideas with other recyclers.
  • A chance to win a basket of reusable, eco-friendly items in our raffle (read more about that below).

Annual Meeting Raffle

Recycling Advocates will be raffling off a Reisenthel Carrybag full of wonderful reusable items. The bag is ideal for taking to the farmers’ market, or on a picnic, or . . . use your imagination! It has unlimited possibilities.

It will contain reusable lunch containers, locally designed and made tote bags, an eco clamshell, cloth napkins, reusable produce bag, and lots more. Watch our Facebook page for updates. We will take cash or check; sorry, no credit cards.

Board Member Elections

Every year at our annual meeting we hold elections for members of the board of directors. This year we have 6 candidates on the ballot and encourage all of our members to participate in the election. Each candidate is running unopposed. 

Susan Mead
  • Susan became a Recycling Advocates’ board member in 2015. Since her Master Recycler training in 2008, she has become a proud Centurion in the Master Recycler Program. She is involved in other organizations: Friends of Tryon Creek and USNA Alumni Association and is a board member of the latter. She is dedicated to supporting changes to current laws regarding recycling and furthering our goals of sustainability. 
Heather Cyrus
  • Heather joined the Recycling Advocates’ board in 2015. She is a certified Master Recycler, bringing the knowledge and passion for the mission to the organization. Heather has experience in communications, social media, website design and a strong background in environmental education. She is dedicated to the implementation and success of the outreach campaigns that Recycling Advocates offers.
Rob Guttridge
  • Rob recently retired as a Waste Reduction Specialist with Clark County in Washington. He worked in recycling operations and/or outreach continuously since 1984. He has served on the board of Recycling Advocates since 1989, including eight years as President. Rob has been RA’s representative on the EarthShare Oregon board and is currently serving as past President on that board. Rob is a member of the RA Finance Committee.

Holly Hummel
  • Holly is an avid environmentalist whose passion matches perfectly with Recycling Advocates’ mission statement. She answered Recycling Advocates’ request for a treasurer, bringing many years of bookkeeping and accounting expertise to the organization. She managed and did the books for her own law firm for years and now co-owns, manages and keeps the books for a number of rental units. Her Certificate of Completion in Environmental Law will give Recycling Advocates a strong foundation. She is ready to put her skill set to use in an area that is exciting to her. 
Brion Hurley
  • Brion is a sustainability leader for his employer and has initiated green teams at a couple of their locations. He led a successful electricity reduction project and implemented a recycling and composting program at the University of Iowa football stadium. He has earned a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt for process improvement and efficiency, a Certificate of Sustainability, Green Manufacturing specialist certification, and is working on Zero Waste Business Associate certification. His teamwork training in Lean Six Sigma and his environmental interests show that he is qualified and motivated to guide Recycling Advocates in their mission.  
Styrofoam Recycling Returns to the West Side

Far West Recycling is now accepting Styrofoam at two locations on the west side, Beaverton and Hillsboro. See KGW's report here

The Rooster Update
