YOU ARE INVITED TO OUR ANNUAL MEETING!
Please mark your calendars and join Recycling Advocates at our Annual Meeting.
You do not need to be a member of RA to attend! This is an important meeting and we need all hands on deck!
Tuesday, September 24
6:30 - 8:30 pm
Floyd's Old Town Coffee
18 NW Couch St. (between NW 1st and NW 2nd)
(See below for transportation info)
Please RSVP now! GO HERE to register via Eventbrite
As in past meetings, there will be amazing speakers! We'll have a lively panel discussion with three female leaders working to increase reuse efforts in Portland.
Brion Hurley, RA President, will share an update on our BYOC coffee cup reduction campaign and we'll also hear from Floyd's Old Town Coffee's Nicole Zimmerman about their BYOC efforts. Finally, and most importantly, we need input from you on where Recycling Advocates should go in the future.
How can we better engage volunteers and supporters in this future?
Are we focused on the right areas?
Is our mission relevant?
Are we still needed after 30+ years as a nonprofit?
Recycling Advocates is at a crossroads. We recently lost a few pivotal board members and will soon be reduced to three board members. Membership has dwindled. Recruiting volunteers is challenging. We cannot continue at this rate without significant change. That change could run the gamut from bringing in new board members and more member involvement to merging with another local advocacy group or having another group merge with us. We are actively seeking your suggestions and involvement. We anticipate that any such change would involve a name change. Our mission has evolved from Recycling towards Reducing and Reusing and Zero Waste, so it reasons that our name should reflect that going forward. We are open to suggestions and our future depends on making a sea change, so please bring your ideas and please encourage anyone who might be interested in creating a new path forward to come to our annual meeting.
Recycling Advocates has a lot to offer. We are a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. We have a Board of Directors, a checking account, money in the bank and a part-time resource director. We have a track record. We have a good set-up to make a difference in the sustainability movement but we cannot go it alone.
If you'd like to shape the future direction of our organization and get more involved in our advocacy, we want you to attend this very important meeting to hear your thoughts and ideas. Please take a minute to complete the survey in this newsletter so we can gather some insights before the event.
6:30 - 7:00 pm Networking + snacks + drinks!

GOT TWO MINUTES? TAKE OUR SURVEY!
Please take this EASY two-minute survey by following the link below! This is your chance to help shape the future of RA.
PLEASE complete the Recycling Advocates Supporter Survey Survey and come to our annual meeting on September 24th. Recycling Advocates is at a crossroads. We need more people on our Board of Directors and more member involvement to carry on another year. We are open to changing directions and/or to merge with another advocacy group. Or, perhaps, it’s time for our advocacy group to call it quits. We’d love to get your input or better yet your involvement. THANKS!
Do Just One Thing: Recycle Your Satellite Dish ... And More! By Holly Hummel, RA Treasurer
www.Earth911.com is a treasure trove of helpful information. Even though I get flooded with emails, which generally get sent to my junk folders, the Earth911 emails are well worth opening. The most recent one was on recycling satellite dishes and I discovered that there is an amazing resource in Beaverton called Recycling Appliancehttp://www.recyclingappliance.com Not only does Recycling Appliance recycle satellite dishes, but they also recycle the following items at little or no charge:
Pressure and power washers
Portable AC units
Projection and flat-screen TVs
PC towers, mice, keyboards
Hats off to Recycling Appliance! I am thrilled that we have such a great resource in our community. Check out Recycling Appliance website to get more information www.recyclingappliance.com. You can drop off items or arrange for item pickup. There is a pickup charge.
