39th Annual Rhododendron Show

California's largest Rhododendron Show!

Join us Mother's Day Weekend—May 7 and 8, 2016—for the 39th Annual John Druecker Memorial Rhododendron Show. Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens co-sponsors the event with the Noyo Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. This year's juried show is expected to be one of the largest on the entire Pacific Coast with over 1,000 entries. The show will feature a cascade of vibrant rhododendrons, raffles, a silent auction, people's choice awards, educational displays, food, and more!

Visitors to the free show will receive a coupon for $1 off admission to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, where 1,156 rhododendrons may be viewed (not all in bloom at once, as we have early, mid-season, and late varieties). A large selection of Rhododendron and other plants will be available for purchase in the big tent and at Nursery on the Plaza. During the Show weekend you can purchase a Gardens membership for 10% off. Membership has great benefits, including access to almost 300 gardens nationwide, through the American Horticultural Society's Reciprocal Admissions Program.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: We would appreciate some volunteer help at the membership booth. Please contact Molly at 964-4352 ext 10 if interested in helping pitch membership benefits to our visitors over the Rhody Show weekend.

CALL FOR ENTRY: All rhody growers are welcome to enter their best trusses for judging. For an entry form, go to Truss entries will be accepted at the Gardens on May 5th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and May 6th from 9:00am to 1:00pm.

Welcome Molly Barker

Our new ED will join the team in July!

We are happy to announce that the Gardens has completed its national search for a new Executive Director who will begin in July. Molly Barker impressed us with her horticultural knowledge, management skills, broad experience in public botanical gardens, emphasis on effective communication, and background in building educational programs.

A little background

Ms. Barker has twenty-five years experience as an inspiring, collaborative leader in public gardens and horticulture. She will be leaving her position as Executive Director at Casa del Herrero in Santa Barbara, California to join us on the Mendocino Coast. Casa del Herrero is an 11-acre public garden and museum with an historic Spanish colonial home and smithy which she helped gain National Historic Landmark designation in 2009. Ms. Barker has had a long history of steadily increasing responsibility at the renowned Filoli Gardens in Woodside, California. She has helped two organizations in their strategic planning efforts, supervised garden operations for Filoli, significantly increased the donor base at Casa del Herrero and developed many successful volunteer programs.

THE GARDEN STORE has great educational books and cookbooks. Just in, all new garden décor with more on the way! Keep an eye out for a fresh crop of t-shirts in May… Follow The Garden Store on Facebook for updates on the latest:

✓  Clear out dead branches on small trees and shrubs
✓  Plant dahlia bulbs (avilable at Nursery on the Plaza) and begonia tubers now that danger of frost is gone

Giving Greens

Organic produce for local food bank
Our mild climate enables us to grow and harvest vegetables year-round. Each week, volunteers harvest the garden's bounty and deliver it to the Fort Bragg Food Bank.  In 2013 we were able to donate more than 2,000 lbs of fresh produce. A major expansion of our Vegetable Garden in 2015 and 2015 allowed us to donate 6,274 lbs in 2014 and a grand total of 7,116 lbs last year! The expansion of this garden means we have the ability to grow, utilize, and donate more produce, at the same time offering tremendous opportunities for education at multiple levels.

We keep a running tally of monthly donations on our website:

If you have a passion for vegetables, volunteers are always welcome! To get involved, contact MCBG Gardener Jaime Jensen at
