It is almost time to renew your FEDC membership! Over the next few weeks you will receive the information you need to confirm your membership renewal. Please take this time to update staff member information, emails, websites, phone numbers, etc. This helps us ensure that all of your team receives membership benefits and has proper access to login for event registration.

US Jobless Claims Dip, Continuing Recovery Trend
The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits dipped more than expected last week, pointing to strengthening labor market conditions. Read More
Florida is Home to Over 2 Million Small Businesses
“Florida’s small businesses contribute so much to the state’s economy,” said Dr. Winslow Sargeant, Chief Counsel for Advocacy.  “Representing 42.8 percent of the state’s private workforce, no one can doubt the significant role small businesses play in our economic landscape.  I hope our state and national leaders will continue to recognize the importance of the American entrepreneur and utilize today’s research to move forward constructive policies for America’s financial foundation—our small businesses.” Read More

New Survey Shows Florida Small Businesses Optimistic, Sales Increasing
A new Florida Chamber of Commerce Small Business Index survey shows that the state's small businesses are more optimistic and are reporting higher company sales. The survey, conducted in conjunction with the Florida Small Business Development Center Network, shows 43 percent of small businesses reporting higher company sales compared to this time last year. Quest Diagnostics Invests $9.3 Million in Customer Service-Logistics Center in Tampa, Florida
Quest Diagnostics, a leading provider of diagnostic information services, opened a new logistics and customer service facility in Tampa, Florida. The project will create $9.3 million in capital investment and up to 350 new customer service, logistics and human resources jobs by 2015. Read More

Local Life Science Firms Growing in Southwest Florida
Lakewood-Amedex Inc. recently raised $5.5 million to begin human clinical trials on an antimicrobial product that fights infections and ulcers, a significant financial milestone that could propel the company's growth significantly. Read More

Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals Relocating to Bradenton Area’s Roskamp Institute Research Facility
Continuing its mission to advance and commercialize research into Alzheimer’s and other treatments, the Roskamp Institute located in the Bradenton area will lease space to Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals Inc., a publicly traded company formerly named Star Scientific Inc., according to Sharon Hillstrom, president and chief executive officer of the Bradenton Area Economic Development Corp. (EDC). Rock Creek plans to add 16 high-impact jobs over the next five years. Read More

Northwest Florida is a Hub of Aerospace and Aviation Activity
Florida is home to more than 2,000 aerospace and aviation companies that employ more than 87,000 workers, have a $5.5 billion payroll and pay an average wage of $63,303. 

At a minimum, 400 of those companies, including 23 aerospace manufacturing plants, are located in Northwest Florida, which has become a hotbed of aviation and aerospace activity that includes research, testing and education. Read More

UCF Pledges $10 Million to Research Center in Osceola County
The University of Central Florida and Osceola County struck a preliminary deal Monday to build a $61-million "smart sensors" research center that could lead to the creation of thousands of high-tech jobs. The sensors are cutting-edge technology used in automobiles, medical devices, home appliances and smart phones. Read More
