Economic Development News Round-up froom The Florida Economic Development Council

President's Message

Good afternoon,

Wow, what a busy week! FEDC would like to congratulate Governor Rick Scott for winning a second term. The Governor's commitment to economic development helps ensure that Florida is a great place to do business.

This week I had the opportunity to attend the Rural Summit in St. Augustine. It was great to see many of the members there . I also had the opportunity to participate in a legislative panel moderated by Cathy Chambers (JAXUSA and FEDC's VC of Advocacy) along with our statewide partners, Mike Preston (EFI), BIll Wilson (DEO) and Chris Doolin (Small Counties Coalition). It was a great opportunity and discussion of the upcoming 2015 Session and our combined commitment for sound economic development policy and important initiatives such as Enterprise Zone renewal, EFI's business brand for Florida and an opportunity to hear what rural legislative items may be rising to the top for consideration. The North Florida Economic Development Partnership and Opportunity Florida did a fantastic job of organizing an action-packed agenda for all of us who attended. Well done!

Please don't forget two important dates for you to particpate in setting the FEDC agenda. FEDC's Legislative Affairs meeting is set for November 12th at 10:00am (EST) and also the 2015 Conference Committee. Call in information is given below - we hope you will take the opportunity to help us shape FEDC's legislative priorties for 2015!

If you have participated before or are new to wanting to help shape the conference agenda, we are doing things a little differently. This year you will have the opportunity to pick from five committee areas that include program, silent auction, exhibitors, fundraising and awards. The Conference Planning teleconference will be held on November 19th at 9:30 AM (EST) The call in number for both calls are 712-432-0075 code 452692#. Please make a difference by joining one or both calls.

Lastly, registration will close right before Christmas for the 2015 Winter Symposium to be held January 15th and 16th in Fort Lauderdale. For all details on all of these planning sessions and events, please visit our website.

AxoGen Graduates from Sid Martin BioTech Incubator

Axogen, winner of the National Business Incubator’s Association’s 2014 Outstanding Incubator Client Award has graduated from the Sid Martin BioTech Incubator. Said Karen Zaderej, President and CEO of AxoGen: "Today we had a major event in our Axogen history…we graduated from the Biotech Development Incubator (BDI). The BDI has been our home in one form or another since 2006. When we got our first funding, we needed to start our development work on the Avance Nerve Graft quickly. The BDI reached out a helping hand and allowed us to lease lab space and get started. In fact, we were in the lab and processing tissue in 30 days…lightning speed! When we developed our first product and we needed a space for distribution, the BDI cleared out a room and convinced the UF facilities people to create the special conditions we needed for a room filled with freezers and medical products. There have been countless times that the staff at the BDI have helped us and they have always been with us as cheerleaders for the successes of AxoGen. Let me just take this moment to thank the BDI team and all of our AxoGen associates. We have come a long way and have done great things – thank you."

Secret ‘Project Orange’ is Hertz subsidiary

"Project Orange," the anonymous company that had been negotiating with Lee County for jobs stimulus money, turns out to have a familiar name: it’s a division of Hertz. "Hertz Equipment Rental (HERC) is 'Project Orange '" said Rich Boome, Hertz Global executive vice president for corporate affairs on Wednesday. Hertz on Tuesday signed a 10-year lease for 55,220 square feet in the old Source Interlink building at Riverview Corporate Center on U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs.

Broome said discussions with county and state economic development officials were going smoothly, but Hertz suspended the talks because of its ongoing financial review and a new interim CEO. "Now is not the right time to make any decision about the HERC headquarters," he said, referring to Hertz Equipment by its future stock market ticker symbol when it becomes an independent company. It’s possible those discussions could resume as Hertz continues to increase its presence here, Broome said. "We will continue to work with both companies to help them fill positions and otherwise facilitate their growth in Southwest Florida, " said Glen Salyer, county director of economic development and assistant to the county manager, in an email Wednesday. "This is particularly exciting because we expect these HERC-related jobs will be in addition to the jobs for which Lee County is giving Hertz incentive funds."
