News from Thingumajig Theatre

It’s been a very busy summer for Thingumajig Theatre! Our giant puppets have played some lovely festivals including several international outings. This autumn we have a 2-month tour with our puppet play about WW1. And look out for our new play for Spring 2015…

Autumn Tour

We’re off!  A 28-venue tour of “A November Day”, which follows a woman’s discovery of the story of her grandfather, a survivor of WW1. The show was created in 2008 in association with the Imperial War Museum North. We toured it this spring and thanks to our fantastic tour booker, Makin Projects, we have an exciting autumn tour throughout the UK starting with a couple of shows at the Jersey Opera House!

Puppets Abroad

2014 was a big year for international work for Thingumajig Theatre. We started the year with the Fish and Chips Festival in Sotteville-lès-Rouen, France. In June, we were in Seoul, Korea to teach a puppetry workshop for the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Foundation. We crated up our hippo and our dodo birds and performed at Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary and then took a crew of seven to perform Jellish and the Sun Birds at STAMP Festival in Hamburg, Germany.  Andrew also recently spent a few weeks in Aarhus, Denmark directing a new mask/puppet play with Theatret Thalias Tjenere

Sidmouth Folk Week

We bring our giant puppets to a lot of great festivals throughout the season but we had a special time this year at Sidmouth Folk Week. We spent the week making jellyfish lanterns with kids and families and then worked with some fabulous volunteers to make three giant jellyfish for the festival closing Torchlight Parade. When we weren’t making lanterns, we had a bit of time to see some excellent folk music and even take some folk workshops!

Our Next Play

We’re currently devising and designing our new puppet play: “Ugly Duckling” the classic story by Hans Christian Anderson. We’ll be working again with our director Mark Whitaker and the play already promises some exciting new puppet, music and staging directions for Thingumajig. The play will be for ages 5 and up and is available for booking from April 2015.
