Thank you to everyone who joined us last week at the Convention Center in Washington, DC for the first Annual Meeting of the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council.  Almost 200 participants representing over 120 leading organizations from government, business, academia, standards developers and NGOs came together for two days of intensive workshops and panels to kick off development of our shared guidance, benchmarking, and recognition program for institutional leadership in sustainable purchasing. Highlights included:
  • US General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Dan Tangherlini outlining the value of SPLC's Principles for Leadership in Sustainable Purchasing to GSA and the sustainable purchasing movement;
  • Chief Procurement Officer (CPO) leaders from Aflac, Interface, Lockheed-Martin, and NREL sharing practical insights on building internal momentum and executive leader support for sustainable purchasing initiatives; and
  • Volunteer facilitators from across our membership leading workshops designed to explore and document challenges, solutions, best practices, and resources for incorporation into SPLC guidance. (Slides from the lead-off presentations are now posted on the Workshops page.)
By the end of June we will be sharing-back a detailed summary of the meeting, including compilations of all the impacts, challenges, solutions, tools, resources and case studies shared through the workshops. Over the next six months we'll be turning those into Version 1.0 of our Guide for Leadership in Sustainable Purchasing, which we have committed to deliver in December, 2014.

Stay tuned!

Welcoming Three New Members

SPLC Member LogoWe'd like to welcome several new members:

SPLC Approved as Liaison to ISO Sustainable Procurement Standard Develoment

International Standards Organization logoWe are pleased to report that SPLC's application to engage the ISO/PC 277 Sustainable Procurement standard development process as a Liaison A has been approved.  International or broad-based regional organizations in the Liaison A role are expected to participate in sharing "in both directions" in order to "ensure coordination of parallel standardization activities in different bodies."  We look forward to playing that role along with the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM), International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
